Secure your dog and keep the animals apart. If the kitten is hurt, ill, or in immediate danger, contact a veterinarian, shelter, or rescue promptly and call ahead. If it appears stable and is in a safe spot, watch quietly from a distance: its mother may be nearby and can be away for several hours.
First, make the scene safe
- Secure your dog. Bring the dog indoors or keep it leashed well away from the kitten. Even a friendly dog can frighten or accidentally injure a small kitten.
- Assess without chasing or grabbing. Stay calm, especially if the kitten is near traffic. If you cannot safely approach, call local animal control or a shelter for instructions.
- Look for urgent concerns. Injury, signs of illness, marked thinness, persistent crying, or immediate exposure to traffic or dangerous weather are reasons to contact a veterinarian, shelter, or rescue promptly. Call before transporting the kitten.
- If danger requires moving it, move it only a short distance. Put it in a nearby sheltered place where its mother can still find it, if that can be done safely.
If the kitten looks stable, give its mother a chance to return
A mother cat may be finding food or waiting for people and pets to leave. The ASPCA cautions that removing kittens may be unnecessary when their mother is nearby (ASPCA found-kitten guidance). Observe from far enough away that the mother can approach, and check again if the location remains safe; her absence for a short time does not establish that the kitten is abandoned. A return can take several hours, according to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County.
If the mother returns and the kittens are safe, leave unweaned kittens with her. If she does not return, or you cannot safely monitor the kitten, ask a local shelter, rescue, or veterinarian what to do next.
Contain or transport the kitten only when appropriate
If the kitten needs temporary containment or transport for professional help, American Humane suggests using a cat carrier, a secure box with air holes, or a small room (American Humane’s stray-cat guidance). Keep the dog secured and do not put the kitten in a container without ventilation. A carrier is useful when a move is necessary; it is not a reason to remove a stable kitten from a safe location before checking for its mother.

Use age cues cautiously; do not guess at feeding
Age can be difficult to judge by appearance. The ASPCA gives rough cues: kittens may begin eating wet food on their own at about four to five weeks, while kittens around two months generally eat independently, weigh around two pounds, and have good coordination. These are estimates, not a substitute for a veterinary assessment.
Kittens should stay with their mother during weaning whenever possible. If the kitten is orphaned or its mother cannot nurse, ask a veterinarian about appropriate care and whether commercial kitten milk replacer is needed. Do not give cow’s milk: it can cause stomach upset and diarrhea in some kittens. Avoid bottle-feeding or estimating a very young kitten’s needs without qualified guidance (ASPCA nutrition guidance).

Check whether the kitten has an owner
- Look for a collar or identification tag, but handle the kitten only if it is safe to do so.
- Ask a veterinary clinic or shelter to scan for a microchip.
- File a found-pet report and ask the local shelter about rules for found animals in your area.
- Post a photo and notice in neighborhood channels, and contact nearby shelters.
A kitten that appears stray may still have an owner. Local shelters can advise on reporting requirements and responsible next steps.
