Introduce a new kitten to a resident dog in stages: set up separate spaces, exchange scents, allow brief viewing through a secure barrier, then try short supervised meetings only when both animals are calm. Let the kitten retreat whenever it wants, reward the dog for settling, and keep them apart whenever you cannot supervise.
Before the kitten arrives: prepare separate spaces
Set up a quiet, dog-free room for the kitten with food, water, a litter tray, a bed, and places to hide. Make sure the kitten can reach these essentials without passing the dog. Keep the dog’s familiar resting place, resources, and routine available, too. A closed door is the dependable fallback if a gate or pen is not secure enough for your dog.
A pet gate or exercise pen can help with later visual introductions, but choose a setup that your particular dog cannot push through or jump over. A leash can help you control the dog during early viewing or same-room sessions; neither piece of equipment replaces a separate room or active supervision.
How to introduce them, step by step
1. Exchange scents
Before letting them see each other, swap bedding, blankets, toys, or a cloth that has been near one animal. Let each investigate at its own pace. If either pet becomes distressed or overexcited, pause and give them more time apart before trying again.

2. Let them hear each other from separate spaces
Allow the kitten and dog to hear normal household activity and each other through a closed door while they remain safely apart. Keep things ordinary and calm; do not force either animal toward the door or into contact.
3. Begin brief visual sessions through a secure barrier
Use a pet gate, exercise pen, or other secure divider so the animals can see one another without making contact. Keep sessions short, quiet, and supervised. If your dog might jump or push through the barrier, keep the dog on a lead and use a more secure separation arrangement.

Reward the dog for calm choices such as looking away, settling, or turning attention to you. Let the kitten approach, watch, or leave freely. Do not carry or hold the kitten close to the dog. Provide hiding places and elevated space so the kitten can get out of view or out of reach.
4. Try short, supervised time in the same room
Move to same-room sessions only after both animals have stayed relaxed during barrier introductions. Keep the dog on a loose lead, let the kitten choose its distance, and end the session while things are still calm. Increase the time and access gradually, guided by both animals’ behavior rather than a set calendar.

5. Keep them separated when you cannot supervise
Return the kitten to its safe room or use another secure separation whenever nobody is actively watching them. Do not leave the dog and kitten alone together until you are confident they are safe together. Even once they can share a room, each animal should have a place to withdraw.
How long does a dog-and-kitten introduction take?
There is no universal number of days before a first meeting or before it is safe to allow unsupervised access. Banfield says introductions usually happen over days or weeks, while Dogs Trust advises that slow introductions may take several weeks. These are practical ranges, not guarantees: move forward when both animals are relaxed and your setup keeps them safe.

When to pause or get help
Stop the session and return to an earlier stage if the dog fixates, stalks, rushes the door or barrier, lunges, or chases. Do not allow chasing as “play” during early introductions. Also slow down if the kitten hides persistently, seems distressed, or either animal shows aggression.
If the dog cannot be redirected or controlled safely, keep the animals separated and contact a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional. A sudden behavior change can sometimes be related to pain or another medical issue, so a veterinarian is an appropriate first contact when behavior changes unexpectedly.
