First, check whether the kitten’s mother is caring for it: a mother cat may be away briefly, so observe from a safe distance if the location is safe. If the kitten is orphaned or cannot nurse, its age determines whether it needs commercial kitten milk replacer or a gradual transition to complete kitten food. Do not give cow’s milk. A sick or injured kitten needs prompt help from a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic.
Check whether the kitten needs rescuing
A kitten found alone is not necessarily orphaned. Its mother may be nearby, finding food or waiting for people to leave. If the kitten is in a safe place and does not appear ill or injured, watch from a distance rather than immediately removing it. ASPCA recommends contacting a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic as soon as possible for a sick or injured kitten; call first to confirm the facility can accept it. ASPCA found-kitten guidance
If the mother returns and is caring for the kitten, her milk is the appropriate food. If she does not return, cannot nurse, or the kitten is visibly struggling, contact a veterinarian or rescue for advice about age, feeding, and next steps.
Choose food by the kitten’s stage
| Situation | What to feed | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing kitten with its mother | Mother’s milk | Observe before intervening if the kitten is safe; the mother may be nearby. ASPCA |
| Orphan too young for solids | Commercial kitten milk replacer | Ask a veterinarian about the product and plan; follow the label. Do not use cow’s milk or homemade formula. VCA Animal Hospitals and ASPCA |
| Kitten ready to wean | Gradually transition to complete food formulated for kittens, initially mixed with replacer | Do not rush the transition or make human food the main diet. ASPCA and ASPCA |
Orphaned and too young for solid food
Use a commercial kitten milk replacer, not cow’s milk. VCA’s veterinarian-authored guidance explains that cow’s milk does not have the same nutritional composition as a mother cat’s milk and recommends commercial replacer over cow’s milk and homemade mixtures. Ask a veterinarian which replacer to use and how much to offer; follow the product label, especially if the kitten is weak, ill, underweight, or feeding poorly. VCA: Feeding Orphaned Kittens

VCA gives a general feeding interval of every two to four hours during the first week, then every four to six hours until weaning. This is a general reference, not an individualized schedule. The page was last updated February 4, 2025; a veterinarian should guide care for a particular kitten.
Bottle technique matters: feeding too quickly can cause aspiration. VCA advises holding a bottle-fed kitten horizontally with its head in a neutral position and using a nipple that allows about one drop at a time. Do not force-feed or increase the flow to make a feed quicker. VCA: Feeding Orphaned Kittens

Kitten beginning to wean
ASPCA says weaning usually starts at about four weeks and is generally completed between eight and ten weeks. Hand-fed orphans may begin at about three weeks. Start by offering replacer in a shallow dish, then introduce a gruel made from replacer and complete kitten food. Gradually decrease the replacer as the kitten learns to eat solids. By five to six weeks, ASPCA says kittens should be eating only lightly moistened food; by eight to ten weeks, they should be accustomed to unmoistened kitten food. ASPCA cat nutrition guidance
Once solids are appropriate, choose complete food formulated for kittens rather than adult cat food or table scraps as the main diet. ASPCA notes that kittens need more energy than adult cats and says kitten-formula food is appropriate until maturity, around one year. ASPCA cat nutrition guidance

Foods and feeding methods to avoid
- Cow’s milk: It is not a substitute for mother’s milk or kitten milk replacer and may cause stomach upset and diarrhea. VCA and ASPCA
- Homemade formula: VCA recommends commercial replacer rather than homemade mixtures. Ask a veterinarian for guidance instead of improvising a recipe. VCA
- Human food as the main diet: Human diets are not nutritionally sound for kittens. Use complete kitten food once the kitten is ready for solids. ASPCA
- Baby food with onion or garlic powder: ASPCA warns that these ingredients can poison cats and kittens. Check the ingredient list; do not assume baby food is safe. ASPCA
- Fast bottle flow or poor positioning: Rapid flow and feeding with the kitten’s head out of neutral position can create an aspiration risk. VCA
These are specific cautions, not a complete list of foods that may harm cats. If you are unsure whether an ingredient is safe, check with a veterinarian before feeding it.

Seek prompt veterinary or rescue advice if the kitten is ill or injured, weak, refusing food, or feeding poorly. A professional can help assess its age and condition and recommend a feeding plan. Do not estimate a feeding volume from appearance alone; the right amount depends on the kitten and the replacer being used.
