Plan on one litter box per cat, plus one extra: two cats generally need three boxes, and three cats need at least four. Put the boxes in separate, accessible locations—not side by side—and make sure each cat can reach and leave one without being cornered or blocked.
How many litter boxes should you have?
Use this rule of thumb: one box for each cat, plus one extra. The ASPCA illustrates the guideline with three cats needing at least four boxes; the Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) gives the same general recommendation. It is a practical starting point, not a guarantee that every household’s setup will work without adjustment.
| Cats | Starting number of boxes |
|---|---|
| 1 | 2 |
| 2 | 3 |
| 3 | 4 |
| 4 | 5 |
For more than four cats, apply the same rule: add one box for each cat, then one additional box. The ASPCA’s example is a practical illustration, not a population study. See the ASPCA’s litter-box guidance and the FelineVMA’s house-soiling guide.
Where should you put the boxes?
Distribute boxes around the home rather than clustering them together. Several boxes in one spot may function more like a single resource if one cat can guard or block the whole area. Choose quiet, accessible locations away from busy or intimidating areas, and give each box a clear approach and exit.

- XX-Large SIZE: Made for large and extra-large cat breeds like Maine Coons, Ragdolls, and Savannahs, this spacious litter box provides plenty of room for turning, digging, and stretching. It’s also a great choice for multi-cat households or older cats that need a little extra space.
- EASY CLEAN: Designed with a smooth interior and minimal crevices, this litter box is easy to wipe down and maintain vs leading stainless steel litter boxes. The high walls help contain spills and litter scatter, reducing daily mess and keeping your cat’s area cleaner with less effort.
- OPEN TOP: The open-top design encourages airflow and makes it easy to monitor your cat’s litter habits. It’s ideal for cats who dislike covered boxes and lets you know exactly when it’s time to scoop, helping maintain a fresher, cleaner space.
- HIGH-SIDED WALL: The XXL cat litter box features tall 14" walls with a 6.5" curved entrance that offers privacy while keeping litter and urine contained. Ideal for diggers and high-spraying cats, the elevated sides help prevent messes outside the box and reduce cleanup around your home.
In a multilevel home, provide at least one box on every floor. This gives cats an option without requiring them to use stairs to reach a box. The FelineVMA recommends different locations and a box on each floor; the ASPCA also advises accessible placement and notes that a box may be needed on every level.
Check whether each cat has safe access
Notice whether a cat can approach and leave without passing a cat that may intimidate it. A box tucked into a dead end, narrow passage, or place another cat can control may be difficult to use, even if there is no obvious fight. Inter-cat conflict and blocked access are among the factors the ASPCA and FelineVMA identify in litter-box problems.

Choose a box that fits the cat
The FelineVMA recommends a box about 1.5 times the cat’s length from nose to the base of the tail. Many commercial boxes may be too small under this guideline. A large plastic storage container or concrete mixing tray can be an alternative if it gives the cat room to turn and dig. The ASPCA also recommends a large box and mentions plastic sweater-storage containers.
For an older cat or one with physical limitations, make sure the entry is easy to step over. High-sided and top-entry boxes may be difficult for cats with limited mobility, according to the ASPCA.

Consider litter preferences and keep boxes clean
The ASPCA says most cats prefer clumping, unscented litter, but preferences vary. It also reports that cats usually prefer a litter depth of one to two inches and that many dislike covers or liners. If a cat avoids a box, the litter, its depth, a cover, or a liner may be part of the problem.
Scoop at least once daily, as the ASPCA advises. The Cat Friendly Practice guide recommends scooping once or twice daily and changing and cleaning boxes regularly. How often to replace litter and wash a box can depend on the litter and how heavily the boxes are used.

What if a cat starts avoiding the box?
Adding boxes can help with access, but it is not the only possible solution. The ASPCA lists several potential contributors to house-soiling, including conflict with another cat, an unpleasant location, dislike of the box or litter, and medical conditions. A veterinarian should check a cat that begins eliminating outside the box, especially when the change is sudden or persists.
- Check that boxes are scooped and clean.
- Make sure each box is large enough and easy for that cat to enter.
- Look for blocked approaches, intimidating locations, or competition from another cat.
- Consider whether the cat dislikes the litter, its depth, a cover, or a liner.
- Ask a veterinarian to assess possible medical causes.
