Start your newly adopted cat in a quiet, secure room with food, water, a litter tray, and safe places to hide and rest. Let the cat explore and approach you at its own pace; there is no universal settling-in timetable. Keep it indoors, introduce resident pets gradually, and arrange a veterinary check soon after adoption.
Before your cat comes home: prepare a safe room
Choose a quiet room away from household traffic. It gives your cat a manageable place to get used to new sights, sounds, and smells before facing the whole home.
- Set out food and water in separate spots, with the litter tray as far from both as the room allows.
- Provide a safe hiding place, such as a box or covered bed, and a higher resting spot if possible.
- Add bedding, a scratching surface, and a few toys.
- Block unsafe gaps and places where the cat could become trapped. Secure windows and make sure the room door and any other exits are reliable.
Ask the shelter or previous caregiver what food, litter, and daily routine the cat already knows. Keeping these familiar at first can avoid unnecessary changes during an already demanding transition. Choose supplies that fit the cat and room: the cat should be able to enter the litter tray comfortably, and the carrier should close securely. Cornell notes that most, but not all, cats prefer simple litter boxes and unscented, fine-textured litter, so do not assume one setup suits every cat. Cornell Feline Health Center’s new-cat care guidance covers these basic supplies.
What to do when you first bring your cat home
- Carry the cat in a secure carrier. Take it directly to the prepared room, with outside doors and windows shut.
- Set the carrier down and let the cat come out. Keep the room door closed and give it time to look around or retreat.
- Keep the first visits quiet. Speak softly, sit at the cat’s level, and let it decide whether to approach. Avoid crowding it or reaching into its hiding place.
- Keep essentials accessible. If a shy cat will not eat, Cats Protection suggests moving food closer to its hiding place and leaving the room. Keep bowls and the litter tray available, but not directly beside the hiding spot.
Cats Protection suggests allowing roughly an hour or longer before introducing the family, but this is a guide, not a deadline; some cats need more time. See its advice on bringing a cat home.

My new cat is hiding. Is that normal?
Hiding, avoiding people, or waiting until the home is quiet to eat can happen while a cat adjusts. Do not drag the cat out, pull it from a hiding place, or force cuddles. Keep the room calm and allow the cat to choose when to come closer.
Check food, water, and litter habits so you can notice changes. A shy cat may make progress in small steps, such as eating when you are nearby or exploring when the room is quiet. Let its behavior guide your response rather than trying to hurry it along.

How long should my new cat stay in one room?
There is no fixed number of hours or days that works for every cat. Keep the safe room available and begin opening up more of the home when the cat seems comfortable. Let it explore gradually, with the retreat still accessible, and slow down if it appears overwhelmed.
Keep the cat indoors while it learns the home. Close outside doors, windows, and cat flaps; beginning to explore indoors does not mean the cat is ready to go outside.

How to introduce a newly adopted cat to resident pets
Start with the new cat in its own sanctuary room, separate from resident pets. Do not assume a cat that has lived with other cats will immediately accept a new housemate.
- Maintain separation at first. Let the newcomer settle in its room and allow resident pets to keep their usual space and routines.
- Exchange scents gradually. Once the new cat has begun to settle, let the animals become familiar with each other’s scent before arranging face-to-face contact.
- Allow visual contact through a secure barrier. Keep early sessions brief and calm, and make sure both cats have hiding places, high spots, and routes away from one another.
- Build positive associations if both are comfortable. Treats or play can help make these encounters less stressful; stop or step back if either cat seems distressed.
Move at the cats’ pace, not according to a calendar. Cats Protection’s guidance on introducing cats to other cats and its 2025 behaviour guide support gradual introductions.

Arrange a veterinary check and watch for warning signs
Ask the adoption organization for the cat’s medical, vaccination, parasite-control, and identification records, then arrange a veterinary examination soon after adoption—especially if its health history is incomplete. When the history is unknown and other cats live in the home, Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises keeping the newcomer separate until a veterinarian has examined it. Ask the vet what tests and preventive care fit the cat’s history and risks. Cornell’s new-cat care guidance discusses examinations and separation.
Contact a veterinarian about appetite loss, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, breathing problems, lethargy, or changes in urination. Do not assume these signs are only stress. VCA advises immediate veterinary attention for breathing problems, straining in the litter box, or not eating for more than 24 hours; inability to urinate is a life-threatening emergency. See VCA’s signs-of-illness guidance. Cornell also explains why a cat that stops eating needs assessment in its article on feline appetite loss.
