Hospital rules and patient eligibility vary, so do not arrive with a dog expecting access.
First, clarify what kind of hospital visit this is
This advice is for a dog visiting patients in a human hospital, usually with a handler through a therapy-dog or animal-assisted activity program. A therapy-dog visit is different from a service animal accompanying its disabled handler. The American Animal Hospital Association explains that a therapy dog used in human animal-assisted intervention is not recognized by the ADA as a service animal: AAHA’s overview of therapy dogs. If your dog is a service animal, clarify the applicable access rules with the facility; a therapy-visit program is not a substitute for that separate process.
Arrange the visit with the hospital
Contact the hospital’s animal-assisted activity coordinator or volunteer office before planning a visit. The hospital determines whether visits are permitted, which areas are appropriate, which patients may participate, and what training, health checks, or onboarding the team needs. CDC guidance calls for facility risk assessment and coordination with the animal handler; one hospital’s process should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
- Ask whether the visit must be part of an approved program and what credentials or orientation are required.
- Confirm where the dog may go, how patient consent and eligibility are handled, and whether the visit can take place in a room or only in a public area.
- Check rules for food, therapy clothing, grooming, vaccination or health documentation, and any restrictions related to allergies or infection prevention.
Decide whether your dog is ready
A hospital can be noisy, unfamiliar, and full of people, equipment, smells, and sudden movement. A dog should be healthy, clean, well-groomed, behaviorally suitable for the setting, and comfortable with the type of handling and interaction expected. CDC recommends trained animals and handlers who understand the animal’s health and behavior.

Do not treat the visit as a way to test whether a nervous dog will get used to hospitals. If your dog is reluctant, overwhelmed, or unable to settle, skip the visit or work with the program and an experienced trainer on readiness first. The handler needs to recognize the dog’s stress signals and prioritize the animal’s welfare over completing a planned route or meeting.
Prepare calmly before entering
Follow the hospital program’s instructions rather than assuming every facility has the same routine. Allow enough time to arrive without rushing and let the dog settle before entering. One hospital program specifically advises toileting the dog immediately before entry, noticing body language when putting on therapy clothing, and visiting only when the dog is ready; those are that program’s instructions, not universal requirements.

Familiar small treats may be useful as optional rewards during preparation if the hospital allows feeding and the dog and patient have no relevant dietary restrictions. Cornell’s advice to bring favorite small, soft treats and introduce handling gradually is specifically for veterinary-clinic visits, not evidence that treats reliably calm a dog in a human hospital. A reward cannot make an unready dog suitable for a visit.
Watch for stress and end the visit when needed
Keep observing the dog throughout the visit, including during greetings, transitions, and handling. If the dog seems uncomfortable, pause, create space, leave the interaction, or end the session. Do not force the dog to approach or accept contact. The CDC states: “A well-trained animal handler should be able to recognize stress in the animal and to determine when to terminate a session to minimize risk.” Follow the hospital program’s procedure for ending or reporting a visit.

Protect health, hygiene, and patient comfort
Follow the facility’s current hygiene and allergy precautions. CDC guidance says therapy animals can be bathed within 24 hours of a visit to minimize dander and groomed to remove loose hair or wear a therapy cape; confirm which measures your hospital requires. CDC also recommends measures to mitigate allergic responses. It reports an estimate from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology that dog or cat allergies occur in approximately 15% of the population; the estimate’s year is not stated on the CDC page.
Medication is not a do-it-yourself solution for a hospital visit. Cornell discusses pre-visit anti-anxiety medication in the context of veterinary visits and advises consulting a veterinarian; that guidance does not establish a medication protocol for therapy-dog visits to human hospitals. Ask your veterinarian if anxiety is a concern, and coordinate any decision with the hospital program.
