Give your newly adopted pet a quiet, secure place to retreat, keep daily routines calm and predictable, and let the animal choose when to approach. Hiding can be part of adjusting to an unfamiliar home, but fear that is sudden, severe, worsening, or otherwise worrying deserves veterinary advice.
Why a newly adopted pet may hide
A move into an unfamiliar home can be overwhelming. New people, sounds, smells, rooms, and routines may lead a rescue pet to hide or avoid interaction while it adjusts. That behavior alone does not establish that something is wrong, but it is worth watching how your pet responds over time and whether the fear is new or intense.
The often-mentioned 3-3-3 rule is a broad adjustment framework, not a deadline: VCA describes the first days as a period of overwhelm, the following weeks as a time of settling in, and the first months as a possible period for feeling at home. VCA emphasizes that it is not a strict timeline and that each pet’s experience is unique. A pet is not guaranteed to be comfortable by day three, week three, or month three. VCA Animal Hospitals’ 3-3-3 guidance was written about adopting a cat; treat the framework as a general reminder to allow time, not as a species-specific prediction for every rescue animal.
Set up a quiet home base
Begin with one calm, secure room where your pet can rest without being crowded. Include water, food, a resting place, familiar toys or treats where appropriate, and a litter box for a cat. Keep the routine simple and predictable. The ASPCA recommends starting with one “home base” and gradually allowing access to more of the home when the pet seems comfortable. ASPCA’s moving-with-your-pet guidance describes that setup.

- Keep the room quiet and limit unnecessary visitors and activity.
- Let your pet use a safe hiding place. Do not reach in, pull the animal out, or insist on handling or cuddling.
- Spend calm time nearby if that does not seem to distress the pet, and allow it to control the distance.
- Expand access to the home gradually, guided by the pet’s comfort rather than a preset schedule.
Build confidence without forcing contact
Give your pet choices and reduce avoidable triggers. Do not flood it with new people, experiences, or close contact in an effort to make it “get used to” things quickly. If you are working on a known fear, VCA’s desensitization and counterconditioning guidance recommends starting at an intensity where the animal can remain relaxed, then increasing exposure gradually while pairing it with positive experiences.
Watch the pet’s response at each step. If it shows fear or stops readily taking treats, reduce the intensity or pause rather than pressing on. A veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist can help tailor a plan if you are concerned or the animal is not progressing. VCA’s desensitization and counterconditioning overview explains this gradual approach.

Keep resident pets safely separated at first
If you have other animals, start with separate territories so the new pet has a protected space and everyone can adjust without forced contact. For a dog-and-cat household, Best Friends Animal Society advises gradual exposure and prioritizing safety; some pairs may never be safe together without separation. Its dog-and-cat introduction guidance describes steps such as separate rooms and gradual exposure.
A closed door may be enough in some homes. A screen door or baby gate can be a useful optional barrier in other setups, but it does not replace supervision or prove that an interaction is safe. VCA’s shelter-pet introduction guidance also discusses gradual steps and hiding places for cats. See VCA’s tips for fostering a shelter pet. Preserve separation whenever you are unsure the animals can be together safely.

Arrange veterinary care and know when to seek help
Review the pet’s adoption medical records and arrange a veterinary examination. Stress and travel can aggravate an underlying illness, and a medical problem can contribute to behavior changes. VCA notes that underlying medical conditions can trigger fear in cats, particularly when fear begins suddenly in an adult cat. VCA’s guidance on feline fears and phobias discusses this possibility, while Best Friends’ new-pet guidance recommends reviewing records and arranging veterinary care.
