Make the routes your older dog uses every day easier to cross: add secure traction on slick floors, remove obstacles, and address stairs or jumps with a suitable ramp or barrier. Choose each change for a difficulty you have actually noticed, and ask your veterinarian about new or persistent mobility problems. Age alone does not identify the cause.
Start with the routes your dog uses every day
Watch your dog travel from their resting place to food and water, the door, and outdoor access. Notice where they hesitate, slip, struggle to rise, turn awkwardly, or try to jump. Those observations help you match a home adjustment to a specific challenge rather than changing the house blindly.
For new or ongoing difficulty moving, contact your veterinarian. Mobility changes can have different causes, and home adjustments support daily access; they do not diagnose or treat an underlying condition. The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2023 senior-care guideline summary recommends considering changes such as traction-providing flooring, outdoor ramps, and increased padding for recovery beds.
Improve footing on slick floors
Hard, slippery floors can make movement less secure. Place rugs, runners, yoga mats, or other traction surfaces along the routes your dog needs, with extra attention to places where they rise, turn, or approach stairs. Keep each covering flat and secured so it does not slide or bunch underfoot. Guidance from the American Kennel Club, AAHA, and VCA Animal Hospitals supports traction aids as a category; it does not establish a best brand or product.

Choose the right fix for stairs, furniture, or vehicles
Traction, ramps, and gates solve different problems. Use traction when the issue is slipping; consider a ramp or pet stairs when a particular step or jump is difficult; use a gate or other barrier when access to stairs or a risky area should be restricted. Select based on your dog’s abilities and the space—not simply because a product is marketed for senior dogs.
If you are considering a ramp
- Check that it is stable, has a non-slip surface, fits the location, and is appropriate for your dog’s size.
- Introduce it gradually and supervise while your dog learns to use it.
- Do not assume a ramp will suit every dog or stairway. The incline, placement, available space, and your dog’s comfort and balance all matter.
For a jump onto furniture or into a vehicle, a ramp or pet stairs may reduce the need to jump if your dog can use it comfortably. Check the aid’s load capacity and surface grip. VCA’s home guidance for mobility-compromised dogs discusses adapting access, but the sources do not establish a universal ramp angle or product ranking.

If stairs should be off-limits
Use a gate or another suitable barrier if your dog should not use stairs unsupervised. If they need stair access, consider whether better traction or a ramp fits their ability and your home’s layout. A barrier prevents access; it does not make the stairs easier to climb.
Make resting places and paths easier to reach
Move bedding to a place your dog can reach without unnecessary obstacles or tight turns, and clear clutter from their regular routes. Consider comfortable, supportive bedding if appropriate; it is an environmental adjustment, not a treatment. VCA’s guidance on helping dogs with osteoarthritis includes home support, but a veterinarian should advise on your dog’s individual needs.

Check whether each change is working
