A microchip can help a found cat get home when someone scans it and its number leads to up-to-date registry contact details. Pet travel documents also record a cat’s identity, but they serve journey-specific health and border requirements—not as a live locator or a replacement for keeping recovery records current.
How a microchip helps a lost cat get home
A microchip is a permanent identifier, not a tracker. When a scanner reads the chip, it displays a unique number. That number must be matched to registry records containing current contact information before the owner can be reached. Cats Protection explains: “Microchips are not programmed with global positioning satellite technology so you cannot track your cat’s whereabouts.”
If a cat is found, a finder can take it to a veterinarian, local authority, or animal-welfare organization to be scanned. If the number resolves to accurate registry details, the owner may then be contacted. The chip only helps when someone scans it and the associated records are usable.
What to do to keep recovery details useful
- Keep the microchip number and registration paperwork somewhere safe and accessible.
- Update the registry after a move or a change of phone number or other contact details.
- Check that the registry’s aftercare service has the correct details, so a person handling a found cat can reach you.
Do pet travel documents replace microchip registration?
No. Travel documents and registry records may contain related identity details, but they have different jobs. A travel document records information required for a particular journey, including identity and health details. It should not be assumed to update the separate registry used to contact an owner after a cat is found.

For example, an EU pet passport includes the animal’s chip or tattoo code, health records such as rabies vaccination, and contact details for the owner and issuing veterinarian. Those details help document the animal for travel; keeping the recovery registry current remains a separate responsibility.
Which travel document applies to an EU journey?
The document depends on the route. EU guidance distinguishes qualifying travel between EU countries from qualifying entry into the EU from a non-EU country; a pet passport and an animal health certificate are not interchangeable for every trip.

| Journey covered by the cited guidance | Document described | What it records or requires |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying travel from an EU country or Northern Ireland to another EU country or Northern Ireland | European pet passport | Identifying code and health records, plus owner and issuing-veterinarian details. |
| Qualifying travel into the EU from a non-EU country | EU animal health certificate | Identity and health information. The cited Your Europe guidance says it must be issued no more than 10 days before arrival and is valid for onward EU travel for six months or until rabies vaccination expires, whichever comes first. |
The European Commission’s intra-EU guidance describes microchip identification, rabies vaccination, and a passport issued by an authorized veterinarian that documents the chip or tattoo code and health details. It references rules and transition provisions effective in 2026, including Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/131, so older summaries may not reflect current requirements. The stated certificate timing and validity also depend on the cited route guidance; confirm current requirements for your trip with an authorized veterinarian and the relevant authority.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check that the microchip can be read during travel
For travel involving the UK and EU, UK government guidance says the microchip must be implanted before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination. It also says airlines, trains, and ferries in the EU can read microchips compliant with ISO 11784 and ISO 11785. Check the chip’s readability and your travel company’s requirements before departure. If a chip does not meet those standards, you may need to bring a reader.
