Keep the room calm, preserve familiar routines and expand access to the rest of the home gradually.
Before the journey: make travel secure
Use a safe, well-secured carrier for the trip. VCA’s travel guidance emphasizes that cats should be appropriately restrained. If you have time before moving, ASPCA recommends helping your cat get used to the carrier gradually: leave it open with food inside, then practice short periods in it and brief trips. A familiar blanket or bedding can make the carrier less unfamiliar. ASPCA’s moving guidance also recommends securing the carrier during travel.
Set up a quiet home-base room
Choose a room away from the busiest moving and unpacking activity. Before bringing your cat in, close doors and windows and check that screens are secure. Place the carrier in the room, open its door and let your cat decide when to emerge. Do not pull the cat out or force it to explore.
Make familiar belongings the starting point: bring the cat’s bed or blanket, food and water dishes, litter box, scratching post, toys and, if practical, familiar furniture. Put food, water and the litter box where the cat can reach them, with the litter box kept separate from food and water. A familiar object is usually more useful than replacing it just because the home is new. ASPCA recommends familiar toys, bowls, treats and a litter box in the initial room; VCA likewise advises a secure room with the cat’s usual supplies.

Keep the room calm and give your cat places to retreat. Avoid letting movers, visitors or other pets crowd the space while your cat is adjusting. Keep the carrier available with its door open so it remains a hiding place if the cat wants one.
Keep routines steady during the first days
Continue the usual feeding and sleeping schedule as closely as the move allows. Visit regularly, offering the kind of contact your cat normally enjoys—such as quiet company, play, petting or brushing—without insisting on interaction. VCA recommends familiar routines and social contact, alongside breaks that let the cat rest undisturbed.

There is no fixed number of hours or days that fits every cat. VCA notes that keeping a cat in one room for several days can be helpful while the household gets organized. Let your cat’s comfort guide the next step rather than opening the entire home immediately.
Expand access gradually and prevent escapes
When your cat seems comfortable in the home-base room, allow supervised exploration of another area. Keep the safe room accessible so your cat can return to it, and check each new space for hazards before opening it up. Close exterior doors and windows, secure screens, and address loose cords, gaps where a cat could become trapped, poisonous plants and pest-control traps. During unpacking, ask household members and movers to watch for the cat near open exits.

Let the cat choose how far to go. If it retreats, allow it to return to its room rather than carrying it farther into the home. If the litter box needs to move to its permanent location, shift it gradually as your cat becomes familiar with the new layout, as ASPCA advises.

For a cat accustomed to going outdoors, VCA recommends keeping it indoors for at least two weeks after relocation before allowing access to an unfenced outdoor area. The period is VCA’s practical guidance, not a research-derived statistic. Begin outdoor exploration supervised, and do not leave the cat outside unattended until it is well familiar with the new home: a relocated cat may try to travel back toward its former territory. A cat-proof enclosed area is an alternative VCA mentions.
