Dogs often take over the couch because it is comfortable and keeps them close to their people. To redirect the habit, decide whether couch access is never allowed or allowed only by invitation, teach your dog to settle on an appealing nearby bed, and reward the behavior you want. Consistency matters more than confrontation.
Why dogs choose the couch
The couch may be a comfortable place to rest, and it puts your dog near the people they want to be around. If getting on it also brings attention or continued access to a desirable resting place, those outcomes can help the habit continue.
A dog taking your spot is not, by itself, evidence of a bid for dominance. The American College of Veterinary Behaviorists says dominance is not a common cause of dog aggression directed toward people; that statement is about aggression, not a general explanation for every furniture habit. Choose a couch rule your household can keep
Decide whether your dog is never allowed on the couch or may get up only when invited. Either approach can work as a household rule; the important part is that everyone follows it. Inconsistent access can make the expectation unclear.

- No couch access: A straightforward choice if you do not want your dog on the furniture.
- Invited access only: A choice if you want to share the couch but want your dog to wait for permission. This works best when your dog can reliably respond to a cue and everyone uses the same rule.
Consider your dog’s comfort and mobility when choosing the rule. If your dog has difficulty getting up or down, seek veterinary advice about their health and mobility rather than relying on furniture access as their resting option. Dogs Trust’s furniture guidance also recommends considering changing mobility and discussing health or mobility needs with a vet.
How to get your dog to use their bed instead
- Put an appealing bed or mat near the couch. Choose a size and style suited to your dog’s comfort preferences and mobility. An orthopedic bed may benefit some senior dogs. Starting close to the couch makes the alternative easy to choose.
- Teach a “go to bed” or “go to mat” cue. Begin nearby. Reward your dog for going to the spot, then for settling there calmly. VCA recommends quiet rewards and gradually rewarding more relaxed postures; over time, increase the distance between you and the dog. Suitable kibble may be enough for some dogs; special treats are optional. See VCA’s guidance on teaching calm and VCA’s puppy behavior training guidance.
- Guide your dog off without a struggle. Use a familiar recall or “off” cue, reward your dog for coming down, and then direct them to the bed or a pleasant activity. If they return to the couch, repeat calmly and consistently.
- Prevent unsupervised practice. When nobody can supervise, block access to the couch or room. This keeps the dog from repeatedly practicing the behavior while you are away.
Use reward-based training rather than intimidation, physical punishment, or aversive tools. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior states that it recommends reward-based methods for all dog training, including behavior problems. See AVSAB’s position statements and handouts.

When couch behavior needs professional help
If your dog stiffens, growls, snaps, or guards the couch, do not try to remove them by force or turn it into a physical contest. Contact a certified behavior consultant or applied animal behaviorist for help with resource guarding. If the behavior changes suddenly, your dog seems painful, has trouble getting up, or shows mobility concerns, consult your veterinarian.
