If a storm may threaten a sea-turtle nest, leave it exactly as you found it: do not dig, cover, fence, or move it. Keep people and pets away, and contact the wildlife agency or permitted sea-turtle response group responsible for that beach. Storms can erode or flood nesting areas, but the effect on an individual nest is hard to predict; moving eggs can also cause harm.
What should I do if a storm is coming and there’s a turtle nest on the beach?
- Keep back. Do not touch, probe, smooth, dig into, or cover the sand where the nest is believed to be. Do not put up a cage, barrier, or other equipment.
- Report the nest. Contact the local wildlife agency or permitted sea-turtle response organization and follow its instructions. Reporting contacts and procedures differ by location.
- Leave the decision to responders. Do not try to protect the nest by moving eggs or changing the beach around it. Storm damage is difficult to predict, and intervention may harm eggs.
- Reduce other hazards. Keep people and pets away, remove beach gear after use, turn off or shield lights visible from the beach, fill holes, and leave a clear route to the water.
If a turtle is present, do not approach or crowd it, use flash photography, or handle the turtle or hatchlings. NOAA Fisheries’ public guidance is: “Do not disturb nesting turtles, nests, or hatchlings.” NOAA’s sea-turtle guidance also describes ways to reduce beach hazards.
Should I cover a sea-turtle nest before a hurricane?
No. Do not place a tarp, sand, debris, or another cover over a nest, and do not install a barrier or cage. The reviewed public guidance does not recommend a do-it-yourself nest cover. Altering the nest or surrounding sand could disturb it; report the concern and let local responders decide whether any authorized action is appropriate.
Can I move turtle eggs if the nest is going to flood?
No—not on your own, even if the nest appears likely to flood. NOAA’s technical response manual explains that storm effects on a particular nest are difficult to predict and that relocation can negatively affect eggs. Its discussion of Florida describes a general practice of not authorizing relocation simply because a storm threatens a nest, with exceptions for certain documented high-risk situations. That older Florida-specific account is not a current rule for every jurisdiction. Permitted local agencies must make intervention decisions.

The Texas nesting and stranding manual describes handling procedures for authorized responders, including restrictions on touching or removing hatchlings. These are managed response activities, not instructions for beachgoers.
Who do I call if a sea-turtle nest is washed out?
Contact the wildlife agency or permitted sea-turtle response group for the beach where the nest is located. If the nest looks exposed, flooded, eroded, covered by debris, or damaged, describe what you can see from a distance. Do not dig to check for eggs or test whether they are viable. The reviewed sources do not establish a single public inspection procedure or reporting number that applies everywhere.

How should I mark or report a nest?
Follow local instructions rather than applying a distance, hotline, or marking method from another state. For example, a 2026 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service notice for the Texas coast tells people to report a nesting turtle immediately and, when possible, remain until a biologist arrives. If they cannot wait, it says they may gently mark the area with natural debris, such as small pieces of wood, in a large circle without covering the nest; it also instructs people to stay 100 feet away. These directions apply to the Texas coast, not universally.
USFWS biologist Cynthia Rubio urged Texas beachgoers to be vigilant about vehicles that might collide with nesting turtles or emerging hatchlings. Follow local rules on beach driving and access: vehicles can damage nests and leave ruts that obstruct hatchlings.
