What to Do When Your Dog Guards the Couch

If your dog guards the couch, don’t confront or move them. Create space, keep children and pets away, manage access safely, and seek professional help when risk is rising.

If your dog is guarding the couch right now, don’t reach in, scold, corner, or try to pull them off. Stay calm, create distance, and move children and other pets away. Once your dog has left the couch, prevent another encounter by blocking access while you make a safer household plan. Couch guarding is a safety and behavior concern—not a reason to punish your dog.

What to do during a couch-guarding episode

  1. Stop approaching. Don’t touch the dog, grab the collar, push, or physically move them. Keep your voice and movements calm; avoid scolding or intimidation.
  2. Give everyone space. Ask children and other pets to leave the area. If you can’t create distance safely, don’t try to handle the dog. Close a door or ask another adult for help without approaching the dog.
  3. Wait until the dog has moved away. Don’t try to lure or coax the dog off the couch during the episode. When the dog is elsewhere, close the room or use a suitable gate to prevent access. Set things up so a barrier does not trap a person and dog together.

A growl is useful warning information: the dog is communicating discomfort or a desire for space. Punishing or suppressing the warning does not address the underlying situation. Resource guarding can include guarding a resting place, and signs may range from freezing or a hard stare to growling, snarling, snapping, or biting. How to reduce the chance of another incident

Manage couch access

When your dog is away from the couch, make access harder or unavailable if needed: close the room, use an appropriate gate, or otherwise prevent unsupervised access. Management helps avoid repeating the same risky encounter; it is not a punishment. Choose a setup that leaves the dog a safe route to a quiet resting place and does not force anyone to pass close to a resting dog.

Offer a comfortable alternative

Set up a comfortable dog bed or other resting spot in a quiet area. Encourage and reward your dog when they choose it voluntarily. A bed is an alternative place to rest, not a cure for guarding.

Teach cues away from the couch

If you want your dog to respond to “off” or “go to bed,” teach the cue in relaxed, low-pressure situations away from the guarded couch. Don’t test a new cue during an episode or rely on it before your dog has learned it. A plan for a dog with guarding behavior should be reward-based and tailored to the dog and household.

When to call a veterinarian or behavior professional

Contact a veterinarian and a qualified behavior professional promptly if your dog has snapped or bitten, the behavior is getting worse, or a child lives in the household. Avoid do-it-yourself exposure exercises around the couch, especially when there is bite risk.

A sudden change in behavior—or new defensiveness when approached while resting, or reluctance to move—can be associated with pain or another medical change. Arrange a veterinary evaluation rather than assuming the behavior is simply a training issue. Until your dog has been assessed, avoid approaching them while they are lying down or resting; invite them to come to you instead. Pain is a possible contributor, not a diagnosis. AVSAB’s guidance on sudden behavior changes.

Choose reward-based help

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based methods for training and behavior modification and rejects aversive methods. Its 2021 position statement says, “Evidence supports the use of reward based methods for all canine training.” AVSAB says this remains its current authoritative position.
