The hiding place alone does not explain why: notice when it happens, what may have triggered it, and whether your dog’s behavior has changed in other ways.
Why might a dog hide behind a curtain or somewhere unusual?
To avoid something stressful
Hiding can be an escape or avoidance response when a dog feels tense. A dog may shelter behind a nearby object or trusted person to put distance between themselves and a stressful situation. Possible triggers include loud noises, unfamiliar visitors, household changes, time alone, or a recent upsetting event. The context matters more than the location: hiding does not by itself prove that a dog has anxiety or is panicking.
For example, if hiding happens during fireworks or another repeatable noise, the sound may be a clue. The American Kennel Club discusses hiding among possible signs of a panic-like response and recommends preparing a quiet den away from windows for fireworks. AKC guidance on calming dogs during storms offers related advice about noise-related distress.
To find a sheltered place
A quiet, safe retreat can give a dog space from stimulation. Veterinary guidance from VCA recommends allowing a tense dog to regroup somewhere quiet and providing a safe place at home where the dog can get away from stimuli. Respect the dog’s choice to retreat; forcing interaction can add pressure rather than help.

Could hiding mean my dog is sick or in pain?
It can. A new or substantial change in a dog that is usually social may be a reason to consider pain or illness, especially if hiding happens frequently or the dog seems different in other ways. VCA’s guidance on puppy behavior notes that a usually social dog spending a lot of time alone or hiding under a table may be in pain; the observation is a reason to seek assessment, not a diagnosis based on the hiding place.
As VCA’s veterinary authors Malcolm Weir, DVM, MSc, MPH, and Robin Downing, DVM, DAAPM, DACVSMR, CVPP, CRPP, put it: “If your usually social dog is spending a lot of time hiding under the table or in rooms on their own, they may be in pain.” Anxiety-related and pain-related behavior can overlap, so a veterinarian can help distinguish possible causes. Pain and some diseases that increase urgency to urinate or defecate can also contribute to distress, according to VCA’s separation-anxiety guidance.

How should I respond when my dog hides?
- Look for a pattern. Note when the hiding occurs and what happened just before it: a sound, visitor, household change, time alone, or other event. Also note whether your dog otherwise behaves normally.
- Offer a safe retreat. Give your dog access to a quiet area where they can settle without being disturbed. Do not drag them out or repeatedly demand attention if that seems to increase their stress.
- Contact your veterinarian if the change is concerning. Seek advice if hiding is sudden, persistent, frequent, or accompanied by changes in appetite, movement, interaction, or other signs of illness. AKC also advises consulting a veterinarian when worrying behavior cannot be connected to an obvious stressor. A veterinarian may recommend further assessment or refer you to a trainer or veterinary behaviorist if a behavior-related issue is identified.
Can a bed or puzzle toy help?
You can offer a comfortable bed as another resting option, but let your dog choose whether to use it. A bed is not a cure for anxiety and does not identify the cause of new hiding. A safe food puzzle toy may be an optional enrichment activity if your dog is comfortable enough to eat and engage; it is not a substitute for veterinary care when hiding is unexplained or concerning.
