There is no single can count that fits every dog. Start with a daily calorie amount chosen for your dog, then divide it by the calories in the specific canned food. Use that product’s feeding directions as a starting point and adjust based on your dog’s weight and body condition; ask your veterinarian for an individualized target when health or weight concerns are involved.
How to calculate a daily amount of canned food
- Set a daily calorie allowance. Use a veterinarian’s recommendation or another individualized feeding plan. A generic calorie estimate cannot account reliably for every dog’s age, activity, body condition, and health. AAFCO advises that a veterinarian or other animal professional can help determine an individual dog’s calorie needs: AAFCO’s calorie guidance.
- Find the calories in the exact food. Check the package for its calorie statement, commonly shown as kcal per can. AAFCO says labels express calories in kcal/kg and a familiar unit such as a can or cup: how to read pet-food labels.
- Divide the daily food calories by kcal per can. For example, if a veterinarian-selected allowance were 600 kcal per day and a can contained 300 kcal, the calculation would be 600 ÷ 300 = 2 cans. This illustrates the arithmetic only; it is not a recommended calorie allowance for any particular dog.
- Split the daily amount across meals. Keep the total daily allowance in view, including treats and any other food.
For a measured gram amount, divide the calories assigned to that food by its kcal per gram. A veterinary chart describes the same general conversion from calorie goals to food amounts: WSAVA feeding instructions and monitoring chart.
Use the food label as a starting point
Feeding directions apply to the particular food and life stage on its label, not to canned food in general. AAFCO says directions for a complete-and-balanced food must specify an amount of food in relation to the animal’s weight and time period for the relevant life stage. Those directions are a starting guide and may need adjustment for an individual dog.
For example, AAFCO gives “½ cup twice a day” for a 10- to 15-pound adult dog as sample label wording. It is an example, not a recommendation for canned food or for another recipe: AAFCO’s pet-food selection guidance.

Check whether the food is complete and balanced
If canned food will be your dog’s sole diet, look for a nutritional adequacy statement that says it is complete and balanced for the dog’s life stage. The FDA explains that such foods are intended as sole diets and must meet an AAFCO nutrient profile or pass a feeding trial using AAFCO procedures. Treats, snacks, and supplements are typically not intended to serve as a sole diet: FDA guidance on complete and balanced pet food.
Canned food often has fewer calories per kilogram as fed than dry food because it contains more water. The FDA reports typical moisture ranges of 75–78% for canned pet food and 10–12% for dry pet food. These are broad category figures, not a substitute for checking the actual food’s calories and feeding directions.

How to mix canned and dry food
Do not feed the full recommended daily amount of both foods on top of each other. Assign part of the daily calorie allowance to the canned food and part to the dry food, then use each product’s kcal per can, cup, or other stated unit to calculate the matching amounts. This keeps the combined food within the same daily allowance.
Count treats in the daily total
WSAVA’s 2024 dog-treat guide says treats should make up no more than 10% of a dog’s daily calorie intake: WSAVA’s guide to feeding treats. Treats therefore reduce the calories available for the dog’s regular food. Conventional treats may not suit dogs with medical conditions, dietary sensitivities, or veterinary-prescribed diets; ask your veterinary team if you are unsure.

Monitor weight and adjust the amount
Follow your dog’s weight and body condition rather than assuming the first calculated amount will stay right. AAFCO notes that feeding directions may need revision if a dog gains or loses weight. WSAVA says individual energy needs can vary substantially and recommends initial adjustments every two weeks to help reach or maintain ideal weight and body condition: WSAVA nutrition FAQs.
Ask a veterinary professional for help if your dog has a medical condition, dietary sensitivity, prescribed diet, unexplained weight change, or needs a calorie target you cannot confidently determine. WSAVA provides nutrition guidelines and resources for veterinary teams.
