You can give a cat places to climb, rest, watch, hide, and scratch without buying a conventional cat tree. Wall shelves, cleared high surfaces, window perches, hammocks, bridges, and cat-friendly tables can each cover part of the job. Choose by the way your cat already uses a room—and provide a stable, suitable scratching surface separately when needed.
Choose furniture by what your cat needs to do
A cat tree often combines several functions, but a single alternative rarely does. Think in terms of elevated resting, a safe route between levels, a place to observe or retreat, and a surface for scratching. You can combine a few pieces to suit your home rather than trying to replace a tree with one decorative object.

Build vertical space your cat can use
Use shelves to create a route, not just isolated ledges
Wall-mounted shelves or a climbing system can add elevated resting spots without taking up the same floor area as a large tower. Think about how your cat will reach each resting place and move between them. A series of ledges is useful only if the particular cat can travel the route comfortably.

There are no universal shelf-spacing, anchor, or jump-distance specifications established here. Follow the selected product’s installation directions, and account for your wall, the cat’s size and mobility, and your room layout. Do not assume that a mounting method suitable for one wall or product is safe for another.
Make existing high places accessible and safe
If your cat already likes to perch, you may be able to clear a safe spot on an existing high surface instead of adding furniture. AAHA names refrigerator tops, high bookshelves, and closet top shelves as possible elevated resting places. Check that the surface is stable, uncluttered, and reachable by your cat; a height that works for an agile adult may not suit a kitten, older cat, or cat with limited mobility.

Add a view, lounge spot, or hideaway where it fits
Window perches are for resting and watching
A bed beside a window can give a cat a place to watch outdoor activity, as VCA describes. Confirm that a purchased perch fits the particular window and is attached as its manufacturer directs. The available guidance does not establish a single load rating or attachment standard for all window perches.
Hammocks use overlooked spaces
VCA describes cat hammocks placed beneath tables or chairs, across windows or mirrors, and over sofas or beds. Their appeal is a dedicated lounging spot that can make use of space already in the room. The specific installation and location should suit the hammock and household rather than relying on a general rule.

Bridges create an elevated play route

Keep scratching as a separate design requirement
Scratching is normal feline behavior, so replacing a cat tree does not remove the need for suitable scratching surfaces. Cornell explains that scratching deposits scent from glands on a cat’s paws and removes the translucent outer sheath of the claws. A scratcher can be a standalone piece that suits your decor, but its useful surface, orientation, and stability matter more than its appearance alone.

- If your cat scratches horizontally, consider a flat cardboard scratcher or a log on its side.
- For a vertical post, Cornell says it should be sturdy and at least as tall as the cat standing on its hind legs with front legs extended.
AAHA also recommends offering several material and orientation options at first. This is a way to find what the cat uses, not a guarantee that a particular design will appeal to every cat.
Place and maintain scratchers based on use
Put a new scratcher near a place your cat already scratches. If scratching happens in several locations, Cornell advises offering an option near each one. If you want to relocate a scratcher, move it gradually. Reward use, and do not throw away a worn scratcher just because it looks ragged: Cornell describes wear as evidence that it is being used.
AAHA recommends enough scratching posts for the household’s cats, positioning them where cats spend time, and making sure the structure is stable. A scratcher that tips over may frighten a cat away from using it.
Check comfort and safety before settling on a layout
- Stability: A scratcher should not topple while the cat uses it. Install shelves, bridges, and perches according to the specific product’s directions.
- Access: Consider your cat’s size, age, mobility, and willingness to jump when choosing a route or high resting place.
- Safe movement: Elevated spots should offer choice without preventing a cat from moving around safely.
- Room and surface fit: Check the actual wall, window, furniture, and household layout rather than assuming a product will fit or attach safely everywhere.
- Behavior: Observe where your cat rests, watches, hides, and scratches, then choose furniture that addresses those habits.
