Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTeach your dog to relax on a mat, bed, or towel, then gradually practice while you prepare and eat meals. The goal is not just staying on the spot: your dog should be calm there until you give a clear release cue.
What “settle” means at mealtime
A settle is a calm station behavior: your dog goes to a designated spot, lies down, and remains relaxed until released. VCA Animal Hospitals describes the goal as being “both physically and emotionally relaxed.” A dog who is lying down but staring intensely at every bite may be waiting for food rather than resting.
This gives your dog a predictable alternative to begging, wandering, or getting underfoot. Teach the behavior away from the dinner table first; a full meal adds duration, movement, smells, and other distractions all at once.
Choose a comfortable station
Use a mat, dog bed, or towel in a quiet part of the room. Humane Society Silicon Valley recommends a stable, comfortable surface such as a skid-proof mat or bed. Choose something your dog will readily step onto, that stays put, and that is practical to move or clean. A specialized training mat is optional.

Teach the mat behavior
- Reward approaching and stepping onto the station. When your dog touches or steps onto the mat, mark the moment with a click or a consistent word such as “yes,” then place a small treat on the mat. You can toss a treat away to reset and reward your dog for returning.
- Shape a down. Once your dog is comfortable stepping onto the station, reward lying down there. Deliver treats quietly between the front paws rather than making each reward an exciting event.
- Reward signs of relaxation. Continue reinforcing calm behavior. A dog shifting onto a hip, looking away, or resting their head may be softening into a genuine rest. If your dog stays rigid and watches your hand for the next treat, make the exercise easier and reward more quietly.
- Build duration in small increments. At first, reward frequently while your dog remains lying down. Gradually wait a little longer between rewards, increasing the interval only while your dog remains comfortable. Add a cue such as “place” or “settle” once your dog is beginning to understand the routine.
- Add a release cue. Use a consistent word such as “okay” or “free” to tell your dog when the station exercise is over. This makes the end of the stay clear rather than leaving your dog to guess when they may get up.
Gradually practice during meals
Once your dog can relax on the station in a quiet setting, introduce meal-time distractions in manageable steps. For example, begin by sitting briefly at the table, then gradually add more activity and time. Reward your dog on the mat during cooking and meals. If a new step makes it difficult to stay relaxed, reduce the challenge before trying again.
Change one challenge at a time where possible: ask for a little more duration, or add a little more activity, rather than expecting a long stay amid a busy meal right away. This progression applies gradual-training guidance; it is not a fixed timetable or a protocol with a guaranteed result.

Set your dog up to succeed
- Before practice, give your dog a chance to exercise, eat, and eliminate.
- Keep early rest sessions short. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends starting with 5–10 minutes and increasing gradually; that is a practical training recommendation, not a study result.
- Use small treats or kibble for reinforcement. A remote-operated treat dispenser is an optional way to reward from a distance.
- Manage the situation while training so your dog has fewer chances to rehearse begging or getting underfoot. Use reward-based teaching rather than scolding: VCA notes that scolding can create frustration, and confrontational or correction-based methods can create fear and may contribute to aggression.
What to do if your dog struggles
If your dog gets up, returns to an easier version of the exercise: shorten the interval, reduce the distraction, or practice the mat behavior in a quieter place. Reward the behavior you want instead of forcing a longer stay.
Barking, whining, or scratching in distress is a sign to stop pushing the exercise. Fear, anxiety, frustration, or discomfort may be getting in the way of relaxation. If your dog cannot settle or shows distress, consult a qualified reward-based trainer or behavior professional for individualized help.
