If your dog is missing, search your home and the immediate area, ask nearby people to check enclosed spaces, and contact local animal services right away. In parallel, report the dog missing to their microchip registry and share one clear photo and consistent description. If someone spots your dog, ask them to report the time and exact location—but not to chase.
What should I do first if my dog is missing?
Start by establishing where and when your dog was last seen. Ask everyone in the household, then search the home carefully: check closets, behind furniture, and other small or dark places where a dog might be hiding or asleep. Look through the immediate area before widening the search.
- Search nearby. Walk or drive slowly around the neighborhood with a recent photo of your dog. Ask neighbors whether they have seen the dog and request that they check sheds, garages, and other enclosed spaces where an animal could be shut in.
- Contact local animal services. Call animal control, nearby veterinary hospitals, municipal and private shelters, and rescue groups. Your dog may already have been brought to one of them. Ask each organization how to file a lost-dog report and how often to follow up.
- Report the dog missing to the microchip registry. Confirm that the registry has your current phone number and other contact details. A microchip can help identify your dog if a collar is lost, but a finder needs the registry to connect the chip to you. An ID tag, by contrast, can be read directly by someone who finds your dog. ASPCA guidance on pet identification explains these roles.
These steps can happen at the same time if you have help. Give one person the calls, another the nearby search, and another the task of preparing a consistent notice.
Who should I call if my dog gets out?
Notify animal control, veterinary hospitals, shelters, and rescue groups in the area. Follow each organization’s instructions for submitting a report; intake and reclaim procedures differ by location. ASPCA’s position statement on shelter responsibilities discusses shelter processes, but it is not a substitute for your local agency’s rules.

Do not rely on one call or an online report alone. ASPCA advises checking with shelters daily and visiting in person with photos to share with staff. Reports can be incomplete, and your dog’s appearance may be described differently by different people. Ask each shelter how it prefers you to follow up, and keep a record of whom you contacted and when.
What should I tell people who see my dog?
Tell neighbors and helpers to report a sighting with the time and exact location, and not to chase the dog. A pursuit can make a frightened or insecure dog harder to approach. Pet FBI’s guidance puts it plainly: “Do NOT Chase.” Pet FBI’s lost-dog steps provide additional guidance for sightings.

If a shy dog is spotted, Pet FBI recommends a quiet, low-pressure approach: avoid direct eye contact, get low, and gently use food to encourage the dog rather than walking straight toward them. Dogs differ, so do not treat one capture approach as right for every situation. If your dog will not approach, ask local animal control or an experienced recovery professional for help rather than improvising a trap. Any trapping must follow local safety, legal, and animal-welfare requirements.
How do I make a useful lost-dog notice?
Use the same recent, clear photo and description in calls, online posts, handouts, and flyers. Consistent information helps people recognize your dog and gives helpers a reliable way to reach you.

- Put “LOST DOG” in a large, bold headline.
- Include the photo, breed or likely mix, sex, coloring, age, weight, and distinctive features.
- State when and where the dog was last seen.
- Add reachable phone numbers; ASPCA recommends including two if possible.
- Ask administrators of local lost-pet social-media pages to share the notice.
For printed notices, consider suitable high-traffic locations near the last-seen area, such as veterinary offices, pet stores, grooming shops, laundromats, and community boards. Check permission and local rules before posting; do not attach signs to utility poles or private property without permission. Printable paper and bright poster board are optional, inexpensive materials—not a special product requirement.
How should I organize the search and reports?
Keep one shared log so sightings and follow-ups do not get lost among messages. Record the reported time and exact location of each sighting, the person’s contact information, and which organizations have been notified. Share updates with helpers so everyone works from the same information.

Continue checking shelters and widening local outreach if your dog has not been found by the end of the first day. A single report or online listing is not a substitute for follow-up. For local reporting, shelter visits, reclaim steps, or sign-posting rules, follow the instructions of the relevant local agency.
