After a move, a dog may head toward its former home because the old place and the route there are familiar. Changed surroundings, disrupted routines, moving-day commotion, and possible cues such as smells, sights, or familiar people may all play a part. The exact reason varies, and there is no guarantee a dog can find its way back safely.
Why might a dog head toward its former home?
A former home can be part of a dog’s familiar surroundings, and a dog may orient toward routes or sensory cues associated with it. Smell and visual orientation are possible navigation cues, but they do not establish why a particular dog went in a particular direction or prove that dogs can reliably navigate back. PetMD’s overview of how dogs find their way home discusses these possibilities without making a safe return a certainty.
Moving also changes the dog’s environment and routines. New smells, unfamiliar surroundings, different people coming and going, and interruptions to meals, walks, and rest can make the transition stressful. A dog that bolts during the move may be reacting to the commotion or an open exit rather than making a deliberate journey to its old address. Cornell’s moving guidance and the American Kennel Club’s moving advice both emphasize the stress and practical escape risks a move can create.
The American Animal Hospital Association gives a useful practical warning: “Pets have a natural instinct to navigate their way back home, so if your pet escapes from your new yard, she may try to return to her old home and end up lost.” This is a safety caution, not a statistic or proof that dogs reliably find former homes. The available sources do not establish how many dogs attempt this or how often they succeed.

Could the move have triggered separation anxiety?
A change of residence can contribute to separation anxiety in some dogs, according to the ASPCA’s separation anxiety guidance. If escape attempts happen mainly when a dog is left alone or separated from its guardians—and are accompanied by marked distress—separation-related behavior may be worth discussing with a veterinarian.
An escape attempt by itself does not diagnose separation anxiety. The ASPCA notes that there is no conclusive evidence establishing exactly why dogs develop it, and following a familiar route is not the same thing as having a clinical condition.

How to prevent an escape during and after the move
Keep the dog away from open exits
- While people are loading or unloading, place the dog in a quiet, secure room with the door closed, or arrange for a trusted caregiver to supervise it elsewhere.
- Use clear household coordination so doors and gates are not left open while people carry belongings in and out.
- At the new home, secure exits and check that fences and gates are closed and in good condition before letting the dog explore.
Cornell recommends a quiet, secure space during the move; the AKC’s guidance also stresses keeping dogs away from open doors and unloading activity. A crate or carrier may help only if the dog is comfortable and accustomed to it. Cornell cautions that confinement may be unsuitable for dogs with a history of separation anxiety or distress when confined.
Make the new home feel familiar
- Set out familiar bedding and toys in the dog’s quiet space.
- Keep meal, outdoor, and interaction routines as consistent as practical.
- Let the dog explore the home and neighborhood gradually, on leash, rather than allowing it to roam unsupervised.
- Wait until the dog is settled and the home is secure before leaving it alone.
These steps give the dog time to adjust while reducing opportunities to slip out. There is no universal adjustment timeline; proceed according to the individual dog’s comfort and behavior.

Update identification details
- Replace or update the visible ID tag with current contact information.
- Update the contact details registered to the dog’s microchip after changing address or phone number.
A tag lets someone who finds the dog read contact information directly. A microchip must be scanned, and it can help reunite a dog with its guardian only if the registry record is current. It is not a live GPS tracker. The AAHA moving guidance recommends updating both the tag and microchip registration.

Contact a veterinarian if your dog repeatedly tries to escape, seems highly distressed, or continues to show concerning behavior changes after the move. A veterinarian can help assess possible causes, including separation-related distress, and advise what support is appropriate for your dog. Escape behavior has more than one possible explanation, so it is better not to assume a diagnosis from the behavior alone.
