How to Help a Dog Settle Into a New Home and Avoid Escape Attempts

A quiet safe space, secured exits, close supervision, and familiar routines help a dog adjust to a new home while reducing the risk of escape.

To help a dog settle safely, give them a quiet secure space, keep them leashed or supervised near doors, and preserve familiar routines while they adjust. Moving-day traffic, unfamiliar rooms, and anxiety can make even a well-behaved dog bolt, so secure exits before letting them explore.

Before moving day, reduce the chance of a bolt

Plan for your dog to be away from the busiest parts of the move. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine recommends arranging a trusted sitter or keeping the dog in a quiet room with familiar bedding, toys, treats, and ambient sound while people carry items in and out. The aim is to keep the dog away from open doors, commotion, strangers, and noise that may frighten them. Cornell’s moving guidance does not display a publication date.

Before the move, update the address on your dog’s collar ID tag and make sure the contact details registered to the microchip are current. A microchip is not a substitute for visible identification: a tag can help someone who finds your dog contact you quickly. Ask your veterinarian about any medication questions; do not give medication for moving stress without professional advice.

Set up a safe landing space

On arrival, keep your dog in a quiet, secure room while unpacking. Put in familiar bedding and toys, water, and anything else they normally use. Close and secure doors and windows, check that gates and other exits are shut, and remove hazards before allowing the dog to explore. If the room cannot be made secure, use another safe arrangement, such as a trusted sitter.

Introduce the new home gradually. Start with one calm area, then let the dog explore additional rooms at their own pace. Keep household introductions quiet and low-pressure, limit visitors and stimulation at first, and let the dog choose when to approach people. Familiar food, mealtimes, and outdoor routines can make the transition more predictable.

Prevent door-dashing and supervise bathroom trips

For early outdoor trips, attach a leash before opening the exterior door and walk the dog to the intended toilet spot. A dog who was reliably house-trained elsewhere may not yet understand where to go in an unfamiliar place. If a dog keeps checking exits, they may also need a bathroom break, so offer a calm, leashed trip rather than opening the door for them to investigate.

Indoors, use a leash, gate, or pet-proof pen to manage access while you unpack and learn how the dog behaves. Keep the dog close enough to supervise, especially near entrances. A gate can limit movement inside the home, but it does not secure an exterior door or replace supervision. For a dog who rushes doors, keep them attached to you, safely confined, or directly supervised whenever an entrance is in use.

Choose confinement that suits this dog

No single setup works for every dog. Choose among a leash, gate, pen, crate, or sitter based on whether the dog is comfortable with it, how reliably it blocks access to exits, whether you can supervise, and whether confinement appears to increase distress.

Option When it may help Important limit
Leash and close supervision Useful for bathroom trips, moving through the home, and staying near you while doors are in use. Requires an attentive person; it does not secure the home if the dog is left unattended.
Gate or pet-proof pen Can create a manageable indoor area while the dog adjusts or you unpack. Does not replace securing exterior doors. Make sure the enclosure is suitable for the individual dog’s behavior.
Crate May help prevent unsupervised access or destructive behavior if the dog is already comfortable with it. Not appropriate to force on a distressed dog or use for long periods without breaks and opportunities for normal activity.
Trusted sitter Can keep the dog away from the busiest moving-day activity when the home is hard to secure or supervise. Choose someone the dog can safely be with; this is not a substitute for updating identification.

Use a crate only if the dog is comfortable in it

Introduce a crate gradually with its door open, using treats or toys to build a positive association. Do not force the dog inside or use the crate as punishment. Cornell notes that crate size, material, and durability matter when selecting one; wire, plastic, and fabric models differ in durability and portability, but no particular type is right for every dog.

Do not leave a dog crated for extended periods without opportunities to relieve themselves, play, exercise, and perform natural behaviors. If confinement brings excessive barking or other vocalizing, pacing, panting, drooling, or elimination, do not leave the dog to endure it alone. A pet-proof pen or sitter may be a better option while you seek professional guidance.

Build familiarity through routine and time

Keep feeding and bathroom times as consistent as practical, and offer calm interaction rather than insisting on attention. Familiar objects and predictable daily patterns can help the dog learn what to expect. Avoid overwhelming the dog with visitors or giving them unrestricted access to the whole home before you know how they respond.

Patricia McConnell, an animal behaviorist and ethologist, offers a rough adjustment framework quoted by the American Kennel Club: dogs may be in a kind of shock for the first three days, may seem more settled after three weeks, and may take around three months to fit into a household routine. This is a general observation, not a measured statistic or a deadline; an individual dog’s adjustment may take more or less time. See the AKC guidance on helping an adult dog adjust.

When to get professional help

Consult a veterinarian if anxiety is severe, persists, or raises questions about medication. A qualified trainer can help you build a safe door routine and work on escape-seeking behavior. If a dog shows distress when left confined, do not assume that more time in a crate will solve the problem; choose a safer arrangement and discuss the behavior with a professional. The American Animal Hospital Association’s new-dog checklist, published June 18, 2026, includes advice on crate introduction and settling in.

For further crate guidance, Cornell’s guide to when and how to use a dog crate explains the limits of confinement. The Humane Society of Huron Valley also recommends leash or confinement supervision during a new dog’s first week in its bringing your new dog home guide, published February 15, 2018.
