Give your new shelter cat a quiet room of its own, familiar supplies, and time to settle in. Let the cat choose when to hide, explore, and approach you; expand access to the rest of the home only as it becomes comfortable. There is no dependable deadline for adjustment, so use the first days and weeks to build security rather than demand a quick change in behavior.

Prepare a quiet home-base room

Before bringing your cat home, choose a calm room where it can stay safely at first. Set up food, water, a litter box, familiar bedding or other familiar objects, and a safe place to hide. Leave the carrier open if possible: it can serve as a familiar refuge as well as the way the cat arrived. VCA’s moving guidance recommends familiar belongings and an open carrier; the ASPCA’s moving advice recommends beginning with a home-base room.

  • Remove hazards and block spaces where the cat could become trapped or be difficult to reach.
  • Check that doors and windows are secure before opening the carrier.
  • Keep the room quiet and limit sudden activity while the cat gets used to its surroundings.

Let the cat leave the carrier on its own

Carry the cat into the prepared room in a secure carrier, set it down, and give it the option to come out when ready. Keep the carrier available afterward. Spend calm, brief periods in the room, but do not make being held, petted, or coaxed out the goal of those visits.

A cat may hide, stay quiet, or watch from a distance in an unfamiliar place. Let it set the pace. The ASPCA advises that shy cats generally prefer interaction on their terms and may need a few days or longer to acclimate. If the cat accepts treats, offering one while you are nearby can help make your presence positive; do not use food to pressure it into contact.

Keep the first days predictable

Use familiar supplies and keep daily routines steady where you can. Give the cat access to its food, water, litter box, and hiding place without requiring it to cross a busy part of the home. Avoid repeatedly reaching into a hiding spot or insisting that the cat interact on a human timetable.

Hiding or wariness can be part of settling into a new environment, but behavior alone does not establish whether a health problem is present. For concerning symptoms or advice specific to your cat, contact your veterinarian or the shelter’s care team rather than relying on a general adjustment timeline.

Expand access when the cat is comfortable

Once the cat appears at ease in its home-base room, let it explore additional areas gradually, one part of the home at a time. Supervise early exploration and check that doors, windows, and potential hiding spots are safe. Cat-proof the areas it can reach, including spaces where it might become stuck or inaccessible.

If the litter box needs to end up somewhere else, the ASPCA advises moving it gradually rather than relocating it all at once. Keep the cat’s access to its resources clear as it learns the layout.

Introduce a resident cat gradually

If you already have a cat, start the newcomer in a separate room with its own food, water, litter box, and resting places. Do not begin with an immediate face-to-face meeting. VCA’s guidance on getting a second cat and introducing adult cats recommends a gradual process that begins with scent familiarity and moves to visual access when the cats are ready.

  1. Keep the cats separated at first, each with its own resources.
  2. Allow them to become familiar with each other’s scent before arranging visual contact.
  3. Move to visual access when both cats seem ready, and watch their responses.
  4. If either cat appears distressed, slow the process and return to a step that feels manageable.

Introductions can take days, weeks, or months, depending on the cats. Progress should be guided by their responses, not a fixed schedule.

Use the 3-3-3 rule as a loose guide, not a deadline

VCA describes the “3-3-3 rule” as a simple way to think about adjustment across the first days, weeks, and months after adoption. It describes possible early hiding or reduced eating, later settling into routines, and growing familiarity over a longer period. VCA also says the guideline is not strict and that each pet’s journey is unique. It is not a measured study result or a diagnostic rule: a cat does not have to be fully adjusted by day three, week three, or month three.

The ASPCA likewise notes that shy cats may need a few days or longer. In its article “Undercover Cats: Who They Are and Why They Need Us”, the organization says, “Each Undercover Cat will need time to acclimate to their new home.”

What you need—and what you do not

A secure carrier, litter box, food and water supplies, and familiar bedding or objects help create a workable home base. A cardboard box, the open carrier, or another safe hiding place can offer refuge; VCA’s feline environmental guidance lists boxes, carriers, perches, and hideaway holes as possible safe spaces. A specialty hideaway is optional, not a requirement.
