Before booking, ask what visitors can do with the animals, whether each animal can opt out and move away, how staff monitor welfare, and what the venue’s conservation claims mean in practice. A label such as “sanctuary” or “rescue centre” is not proof of good welfare. The guidance below is general and international; check the park’s current policies and the rules where you plan to visit.
Ask what visitors can do with the animals
Get a clear description of the activities—not just a general assurance that the experience is ethical. Ask:
- Can visitors touch, hold, ride, bathe, walk with, or take close-contact photos with wild animals?
- Do any animals perform, or are they lured or chased closer so visitors can see or photograph them?
- Can visitors watch from a distance without joining an interaction?
World Animal Protection’s wildlife-attraction checklist identifies direct contact, performances, and luring or chasing animals as practices to question. It also flags animals kept in cages that fail basic welfare needs and attractions selling animal products. These are screening questions, not a remote inspection of a particular park.
Why elephant rides deserve particular scrutiny
In a position passed in May 2021, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) said that visitor elephant rides at a zoo or wildlife park are contrary to its 2020 Animal-Visitor Interaction Guidelines. WAZA says such rides should be excluded for safety and welfare reasons. This is WAZA’s position for its member facilities, not a statement of law in every country. Read the WAZA position on elephant rides and check local rules separately.

Ask whether animals can choose and move away
Ask: “Can each animal choose whether to take part, and can it leave the interaction whenever it wants?” Follow up with: “How do staff make that possible in practice?”
WAZA’s interaction guidance calls on institutions to consider an animal’s suitability, monitor welfare, and ensure staff have appropriate expertise. Its 2025 Animal Welfare Strategy also calls for experience animals to have agency and control, including choice over participation. A useful answer should explain how an animal can decline or end an interaction—not merely say that staff know the animal well.

When observing animals, look for opportunities to move and behave naturally. World Animal Protection’s elephant-friendly tourist guide recommends looking without touching and considering whether elephants have space to move and show natural behaviour. A venue’s name or rescue language cannot establish those conditions on its own.
Ask how welfare and safety are managed
Ask who is responsible for monitoring animals during visitor activities, what staff watch for, and what happens if an animal appears distressed or does not want to participate. WAZA’s Animal-Visitor Interaction Guidelines identify welfare monitoring, animal suitability, staff expertise, visitor messaging, and safety as key considerations.

Ask for the visitor safety rules before you book: how close people may get, whether barriers or staff supervision are used, and whether the activity changes if an animal does not cooperate. Rules vary by species, venue, and location, so a general claim that an activity is “safe” is not a substitute for the specific precautions.
Ask what “rescue,” “sanctuary,” and conservation mean
Ask: “What does ‘rescue’ mean here, and what happens to animals that cannot be released?” Ask also what conservation or education outcome the experience supports and how visitors are taught about it.

There is no single universal test established here for rescue or release claims. Request specific, understandable information rather than treating a label as proof. WAZA includes messaging among its interaction considerations and describes animal interactions as a potential part of conservation education; that does not independently verify a particular park’s conservation claims.
World Animal Protection’s animal-friendly travel tips describe the Five Freedoms as a basic welfare test: freedom from hunger and thirst; discomfort; pain, injury, and disease; restriction of normal behaviour; and fear and distress. Use them as prompts for questions and observations, not as a substitute for a qualified assessment of a venue.

Ask whether accreditation is current and what it covers
Ask the park whether it is currently accredited, by which organization, and whether the accreditation covers the animals and activity you plan to join. Verify the answer in current records rather than assuming all attractions—or every activity at an accredited facility—are covered.
The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) describes its accreditation process as involving a detailed application and a multiple-day on-site inspection by experts. Its accreditation information and 2026 accreditation materials describe AZA’s process and standards; they do not establish the current status of a particular park without checking that park’s listing.
Use claims and statistics in their proper scope
World Animal Protection’s 2026 elephant-friendly tourist guide reports that its Elephant Tourism Report surveyed 236 elephant venues holding 2,849 elephants and found that two out of three elephants in those surveyed venues were kept in poor living conditions. That figure concerns the surveyed elephant venues; it is not a measure of every wildlife park or every species.
