Introduce two dogs gradually: start with a parallel walk outdoors, then move to brief, supervised indoor visits with separate resting spaces and no food or toys in the shared area. Let the dogs’ comfort—not a deadline—determine when to move closer. If either dog becomes stiff, fixates, retreats, or guards resources, add distance and seek qualified help when needed.
Prepare the home before the dogs meet
Set up a separate resting area for each dog so either can take a break without having to pass the other. A sturdy baby gate can provide controlled visual access while keeping the dogs apart; use a closed door when a gate is not enough to keep them safely separated.
Before shared time, put away food bowls, bones, toys, and other items either dog might value or guard. Plan to feed the dogs separately, such as in different rooms or behind a secure barrier. These steps reduce avoidable competition while the dogs are getting used to one another. See SPCA of Texas’s guidance on introducing a new pet and the ASPCA’s overview of food guarding.
Start with a parallel walk outdoors
- Use two handlers if possible. Each person should handle one dog, leaving both able to move away rather than being brought nose-to-nose.
- Begin far enough apart for both dogs to stay at ease. Walk in the same direction with loose leads. Avoid pulling the dogs toward each other or forcing a greeting.
- Close the distance gradually only while both dogs remain comfortable. If either dog stiffens, stares persistently, tries to retreat, or otherwise seems uneasy, move farther apart or end the session.
- Keep the walk calm and low-pressure. The aim is for the dogs to share space without being pressed into contact. RSPCA Queensland recommends parallel walking on lead, starting farther apart and moving closer when both dogs are comfortable: How to introduce dogs to each other.
Bring the dogs indoors in short, supervised stages
After a calm outdoor introduction, allow brief indoor contact while an adult can directly supervise. Keep each dog’s separate area available, and use a gate or door to manage visual access and give the dogs room to rest. A gate is a management aid, not a substitute for supervision or a secure door when you need full separation.

Do not leave the dogs together when nobody can directly supervise them. Seattle Humane recommends keeping dogs separated when they are unsupervised, and the SPCA of Texas describes visual inspection through a baby gate after initial separation. You can review their guidance at Seattle Humane and the SPCA of Texas.
Keep early shared sessions short and uneventful. Avoid crowding, forced greetings, and leaving valued items between the dogs. If you can reward calm behavior without making either dog compete for food, do so; otherwise, focus on creating space. End a session while both dogs are still managing comfortably, then let them rest separately.

Read discomfort as a reason to create space
Watch the whole dog, not just the tail. A wag by itself does not show that a dog is comfortable. Stiffness, stillness, direct staring, looking or leaning away, and retreat are cues to slow down, increase distance, or end the interaction.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior warns that a dog “holding his body stiff and still” may be more likely to snap, growl, or bite if another dog continues to press the interaction. Treat that posture as a cue to give the dog room—not as an invitation to insist on a greeting. Read AVSAB’s guide to canine facial expressions and body postures.

Keep food, toys, and other valued items separate
Feed the dogs apart and keep bones, toys, and other potentially contested items out of shared space during early introductions. Food guarding can range from carrying an item away or growling to more serious aggression; the ASPCA describes separate rooms, crates, or barriers as ways to keep dogs apart while eating.
Do not punish or intimidate a dog for guarding. The ASPCA cautions that this can make the behavior worse. Changing a dog’s response may involve desensitization and counterconditioning, and aggression-related cases call for support from a qualified professional with relevant behavior experience. See the ASPCA’s food-guarding guidance.

Let progress follow the dogs, not a calendar
There is no established universal timetable for when two dogs should be ready to share a home comfortably. Keep using separate spaces and supervised contact, and move forward only as their behavior supports it. Restrict unsupervised access until you have a reliable safety plan for the household.
If introductions are not warming up after two weeks, the Humane Society of Sonoma County suggests contacting its training support. That is its own escalation guide, not a universal deadline: Dog to Dog Introductions.

Know when to get professional help
Contact a qualified behavior professional if either dog has a history of aggression, snapping, or biting; shows substantial resource guarding; or remains persistently fearful. Do not force the dogs to “work it out.” Until you have professional guidance and a workable safety plan, manage the household so the dogs can remain separated when necessary.
