To help a lost animal safely, pause, keep your distance, and contact local animal services for instructions before trying to approach or move it. An unfamiliar animal may bite or scratch, especially if frightened, sick, or injured. If it is aggressive, behaving unusually, or seriously hurt, do not attempt to capture it yourself.

First, assess the animal from a safe distance

Stay calm and avoid sudden movements. Do not chase, corner, or grab an animal that is frightened, defensive, or trying to get away. Keep children and your own pets well back, and give the animal a clear path to leave.

Do not assume that an unfamiliar animal is safe to handle. The ASPCA advises caution around unfamiliar animals and says not to approach strays showing odd behavior or aggression. If you are unsure what you are seeing, stay back and call your local animal-control agency or shelter for advice.

When to call for trained help immediately

Do not try to capture an animal that appears dangerous or seriously injured. Contact local animal control, a shelter, or the appropriate emergency service and describe the animal’s location, behavior, and visible condition. The ASPCA identifies severe trauma, difficulty standing, seizures, and excessive bleeding as emergency signs in pets; it also warns that a severely injured pet may act aggressively.

  • Keep people and pets away from the area.
  • Do not give food, medication, or improvised veterinary treatment.
  • Follow the responder’s instructions and do not move the animal unless they advise you to and it is safe.

There is no universal first-aid or capture procedure for an unknown animal. A well-intentioned attempt to help can increase fear or cause injury, so leave high-risk situations to trained responders.

If the animal appears to be a calm pet and handling is plainly safe

Only consider approaching when the animal is calm, you can do so without cornering it, and there are no signs of serious injury or unusual behavior. The ASPCA recommends a slow, calm approach to a dog and says to call for help if it shows aggression. If the animal becomes fearful or defensive, stop and back away.

For a cat in an emergency-care situation, ASPCA guidance describes gently covering its head with a towel or blanket and using an open-topped carrier or box. If spinal injury is possible, support the head and avoid twisting the neck. These are pet-emergency handling instructions, not general advice for capturing an unknown, frightened, aggressive, or wild animal.

If a calm cat or small pet can be moved safely, a sturdy, ventilated carrier may help with transport. Do not use a carrier as a way to trap an animal you cannot safely approach.

Contact local services before deciding where the animal goes

Call your local shelter or animal-control agency for guidance before taking the animal somewhere or deciding to keep it temporarily. Ask how to check for identification, where the animal should be taken, and whether local rules require you to report finding it. Procedures and legal duties vary by location; the ASPCA advises finders to follow local law and use any designated facilities.

If the animal is wildlife

Do not treat a wild animal as a stray pet. Keep your distance and contact the relevant local wildlife agency or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for instructions. The ASPCA says injured or orphaned wild animals should be cared for by licensed rehabilitators whose goal is to return them to the wild. Do not attempt to handle or transport wildlife unless a qualified professional directs you to do so.
