Bring a current photo ID, any address or eligibility documents the event requests, and a safe way to transport the animal. For a cat, confirm whether you need to bring a secure carrier; for a dog, ask what leash or other restraint is required. Adoption-event rules vary, so check the organizer’s latest instructions before you leave. You can usually wait to buy food, bowls, and size-dependent gear until you know which pet you’re adopting.
What to bring to a pet adoption event
- Current photo ID: Bring an unexpired government-issued ID. The ASPCA’s New York City Mobile Adoption Unit, for example, asks for an ID showing your date of birth; that is one organizer’s policy, not a universal rule. Check the ASPCA’s mobile-event guidance.
- Proof of address, if requested: Keep a recent document available, such as a lease or utility bill, if the event requires proof of current address. The ASPCA says this may be required for its NYC mobile events.
- Household details: Be ready to provide the names of adult household members if the organizer asks. Check in advance whether other household members must attend.
- Eligibility and application information: Review the event’s requirements for adopter age, application steps, housing permission, fees, and any information needed about current pets. Some organizations may ask for existing-pet records or an introduction; do not assume the same process applies everywhere.
- Safe transport equipment: Confirm what is required for your chosen animal and the trip home. Keep the pet contained and secured during travel.
- Questions and a way to take notes: Bring a phone or notebook so you can record the animal’s care needs, history, and follow-up instructions.
What should I bring to adopt a cat or dog?
For a cat: confirm the carrier policy
Plan for a secure cat carrier for the ride home, then ask whether you must bring your own. The ASPCA’s NYC mobile unit says adopters may bring a carrier or receive one, while its adoption center describes secure-carrier requirements. Check the adoption center’s current instructions as well as the event-specific guidance. A cat should not travel loose in a car or held in someone’s arms.
For a dog: ask about a leash and other restraint
Ask the organizer what to bring and how the dog should be secured for the trip. Petfinder’s dog checklist includes a four-to-six-foot leash, and an individual shelter listing asks adopters to bring a leash and a crate or carrier as appropriate. Those examples do not establish a rule for every event. Follow the organizer’s current directions about leash, crate, or carrier.
What do I need to adopt a pet? Check these rules before you go
Contact the event or read its current adoption information before traveling. Confirm the details that can affect whether you can complete an adoption that day:

- Minimum adopter age and accepted forms of ID.
- Whether proof of address or permission from a landlord is required.
- Whether an application must be completed ahead of time or on site.
- Whether all adult household members need to participate.
- Whether children or current pets should attend, and whether introductions are arranged.
- Adoption fees, payment methods, and the likely timing of the process.
- Transport requirements for the animal you may adopt.
Policies differ by organization and event. For example, the ASPCA’s mobile-unit ID and address guidance applies to that program; it should not be treated as a universal adoption checklist.
Questions to ask before you commit
Ask the staff or caretaker what they know about the animal and what support is available after adoption. Not every animal will have a complete history, so distinguish confirmed information from what is unknown.

- Who should you contact if a concern comes up after bringing the pet home?
- What post-adoption support or return policy does the organization offer?
