Before adopting, check that your household, schedule, and budget can meet the animal’s needs over its lifetime. Ask the shelter, rescue, or foster caregiver about the animal’s health records, behavior in different settings, experience with children or other pets, and what care or supplies are needed next. Then arrange a veterinary visit soon after adoption and give the animal time to settle in.
Questions to ask yourself before adopting
Can I provide care for the animal for its lifetime?
Daily care involves more than food and a place to sleep. It also means companionship, exercise or other activity, preventive and illness care, and attention to physical and mental health. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) describes dog ownership as responsibility for a dog’s “food, shelter, companionship, exercise, and physical and mental health for the rest of its life” (AVMA: Selecting a pet dog).
Does my home and schedule suit this animal?
Consider how much time people are home, the animal’s likely activity needs, available space, and how much noise or ordinary pet behavior your household can accommodate. Make sure everyone who lives with you is prepared to welcome the animal. The AVMA advises considering possible allergies and whether household members can tolerate normal dog behavior; its cat guidance raises the same kinds of household-fit questions for cats (AVMA: Selecting a cat).
Can I budget for routine and unexpected care?
Ask what the adoption fee covers, but do not assume it pays for all future care. Veterinary visits, vaccinations, parasite prevention, treatment, and emergencies may bring additional costs. Fees and local services vary, so ask the organization about this animal’s known upcoming needs and make a plan for ongoing and unexpected expenses. ASPCA notes that high veterinary costs can be a barrier that contributes to pets being relinquished (ASPCA: Adoption tips).

Am I ready to help the animal adjust?
A new home is a major change, and settling in can take time. Plan to keep routines as consistent as practical, provide a calm space, and allow the animal to become comfortable at its own pace. ASPCA’s adoption guidance discusses adjustment and bonding over the first months (ASPCA: Adoption tips).
Questions to ask about health and ongoing care
- What health exam has the animal received, and were any concerns noted?
- Which vaccinations, parasite-prevention treatments, spay or neuter care, and medications are complete, due, or recommended?
- Can I review the available veterinary records and get instructions for any continuing care?
- Are there known follow-up visits, treatments, or other upcoming expenses?
- What does the adoption fee include, specifically for this animal?
ASPCA advises establishing care with a nearby veterinarian shortly after adoption. Adoption fees differ by organization and may help cover veterinary care, sterilization, vaccinations, and food; confirm the individual animal’s records and the fee’s inclusions directly with the organization (ASPCA: Adoption tips).

Questions to ask about behavior and history
- What has the animal been like in foster care, at the shelter, and around unfamiliar people?
- How does it respond to handling, play, rest, common cues, and time alone?
- What is known about its interactions with children, dogs, cats, or other animals relevant to my home?
- Has a concerning behavior appeared in more than one setting? What support or management has helped?
Ask who observed the behavior and in what circumstances. ASPCA recommends gathering information from multiple sources, such as prior caregivers, finders, medical intake, staff, and socialization interactions (ASPCA Pro: Shelter behavior assessments). A behavior assessment is not a guarantee of how an animal will behave in a home: ASPCA says the predictive value of assessments is inconclusive and that they have not proved highly accurate or precise at predicting aggression after adoption (ASPCA Pro: Shelter behavior assessments).
For a dog, ask about social interactions
Useful observations include whether the dog seeks interaction, enjoys petting or play, can relax with a person, responds to common cues, and is motivated by treats. These are clues to discuss, not promises of future behavior; the setting and observer can affect what is seen (ASPCA Pro: Shelter behavior assessments).

Questions about children, other pets, and the transition home
- Has the animal lived with children or other pets? What exactly was observed?
- What introduction process does the organization recommend for my household?
- Should any current food, medication, routine, or familiar item continue during the transition?
- What supplies should be ready, and whom should I contact if questions arise after adoption?
Match introductions to the individual animal and your household rather than assuming that past experience guarantees a particular outcome. AVMA cautions that an older pet may be less tolerant of a puppy’s behavior and recommends consulting a veterinarian or trainer about introductions (AVMA: Selecting a pet dog). ASPCA recommends preparing the home and supplies and keeping routines consistent while a newly adopted animal adjusts (ASPCA: Adoption tips).
What to prepare before adoption day
For a dog
- Have a collar, leash, ID tag, and food and water bowls ready, as AVMA advises.
- Pet-proof the home before the dog arrives.
- Ask whether the shelter recommends a harness or particular toys; ASPCA adoption tips name a leash and harness and note that toys can help direct chewing (AVMA: Selecting a pet dog; ASPCA: Adoption tips).
For a cat
Plan safe transport and a calm home setup, and ask the organization for its instructions and supply list. A cat carrier is a practical way to transport a cat home and to veterinary visits; ask the shelter what type and size are appropriate for the individual cat. The AVMA’s cat-selection guidance addresses care responsibilities and household fit, but does not give a universal current shopping list (AVMA: Selecting a cat).
