How to Prepare Your Home for a Newly Adopted Small Pet

Before your new small pet arrives, prepare a quiet, secure home base and check the individual animal’s housing, diet, health and settling needs with the adoption center.

Prepare a quiet, secure home base before your new pet arrives, but do not assume one setup works for every small animal. Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, hamsters and other small pets differ in housing, diet, bedding, exercise and social needs. Ask the adoption center for advice tailored to the individual animal, and check medical questions with a veterinarian experienced with that species.

Start with the animal, not a generic shopping list

Before buying supplies, ask the adoption center what the animal is used to and what it needs in its new home. The RSPCA notes that housing, bedding, enrichment, diet and care vary among small pets, and adoption teams can offer advice for the animal you are adopting: RSPCA guidance on adopting a small pet.

  • Ask what enclosure and exercise arrangements are suitable, including any dimensions or security requirements.
  • Find out what food, bedding, hides and enrichment the animal currently uses, and how to make any changes gradually.
  • Ask about the animal’s health history, current medication, behavior, and any known sensitivities or special care.
  • Confirm whether the animal needs a companion. For example, the RSPCA says guinea pigs and rats are social and often need companions, while most hamsters usually live alone. This is not a universal pairing rule; follow the adoption center’s advice for your animal.

For species-specific details not covered here, use the adoption center’s guidance and consult a veterinarian familiar with that species.

Choose and prepare a safe home base

Decide where the animal will spend its first days and make that area quiet, secure and appropriate for its needs. Keep it away from household commotion and from pets that could frighten or endanger it. Have the enclosure, bedding, hiding places, food and water ready before bringing the animal home.

Remove hazards the animal might chew, swallow or become trapped in. A general VCA checklist recommends putting away chewable or swallowable objects, toxic plants, medicines and chemicals: VCA’s new-pet checklist. Add species-specific checks: for rabbits, remove wires, houseplants, small toys and foam from their living area; for ferrets, block small gaps into inaccessible spaces and keep foam, plastic and rubber items out of reach.

Provide suitable bedding, secure hiding places and safe enrichment selected for the species. Ask the adoption center whether the individual animal has familiar items or materials it already uses safely. A product that is appropriate for one animal may be unsuitable for another.

Plan safe movement and exercise

Every animal needs a setup that meets its own movement and exercise needs. Assess any proposed area for species and individual suitability, room to move, escape prevention, chew or swallow hazards, quiet and access to appropriate enrichment. Do not treat a product category or room arrangement as universally suitable.

For rabbits

Rabbits need a secure, spacious environment with room to move and appropriate shelter, hiding places and enrichment. Depending on whether their needs can be met, their arrangement may include a secure enclosure and exercise area or a rabbit-proofed room. A small animal playpen can be one rabbit-specific way to provide a secure exercise area, but its size, construction and security must suit the rabbit; no generic pen is automatically right for every small pet. Keep rabbits out of unproofed areas and do not allow unsupervised roaming where hazards remain. See the RSPCA’s rabbit environment guidance and VCA’s advice on housing a rabbit.

For guinea pigs

Prepare a calm location away from threatening pets, suitable bedding, safe hiding places, food, water, space and appropriate toys. The RSPCA recommends companionship with at least one friendly guinea pig unless a veterinarian or clinical animal behaviorist advises otherwise. Guinea pigs are sensitive to temperature extremes; consult current RSPCA guinea-pig environment guidance and your veterinarian for species-specific details rather than applying one temperature rule to other animals.

For ferrets

Check for gaps into walls, furniture or other inaccessible spaces, and prevent access to foam, plastic and rubber objects they may chew. Ferrets can get into surprisingly small spaces, so secure openings before letting one explore. See VCA’s ferret housing guidance.

Arrange veterinary care before you need it

Identify a veterinarian who treats the species you are adopting, and ask the clinic how to arrange an initial examination. VCA recommends an initial examination for a new small mammal, preferably within one to two weeks; the visit can cover feeding, housing, care and grooming. Some general practitioners may not be comfortable with exotic small-animal care. Confirm the appropriate timing with the adoption center and veterinarian, especially if the animal has symptoms or known health needs. VCA’s guide to a new small mammal veterinary visit explains what to discuss.

Make the first days calm and gradual

Bring the animal directly to its prepared home base and let it settle in a quiet, secure space. Follow the adoption center’s instructions about handling, feeding and introducing the animal to other household members or pets. Avoid assuming that a settling timeline for one species applies to another.
