Help your dog stay calm by making difficult situations easier first, then gradually pairing manageable exposure with something the dog enjoys. Keep enough distance from crowds, noises, or other animals for your dog to remain relaxed and able to accept a valued reward. If your dog becomes distressed, increase distance or leave; never force an encounter or punish fear.

Start by making the situation manageable

Notice which specific situations trouble your dog: a busy sidewalk, an approaching dog, a household sound, or several triggers at once. For now, reduce avoidable exposure. Choose quieter routes or times, keep distance from other animals, and use a parked car, tree, or other visual barrier to break your dog’s view of a trigger. Management protects your dog and makes gradual training more feasible; it does not guarantee that every trigger can be avoided. AVSAB’s guidance on managing fearful dogs recommends adjusting routes and timing, using barriers, and providing enrichment.

If walks are repeatedly overwhelming, temporarily replace some outings with yard sniffing, home enrichment, or other activities while you work on the underlying fear. Bring a reward your dog genuinely values, such as a favorite treat, toy, or activity. Treats can help create a positive association, but they are a training aid—not a cure for anxiety.

Train at a level your dog can handle

Pair the trigger with something positive

Begin far enough away—or with a sound quiet enough—that your dog can notice the trigger without becoming distressed. When the trigger appears or starts, offer the reward; stop when the trigger is gone. This pairing helps change what the trigger predicts for your dog. The American Kennel Club’s guide to desensitization and counterconditioning describes this gradual approach.

Increase difficulty in small steps, changing one feature at a time where possible. With another dog, for example, work first on comfortable distance before adding movement or a busier setting. For sound practice, begin at a low volume and raise it only while your dog remains comfortable. A dog’s workable distance and sound level are individual; an example distance such as 20 feet is not a universal prescription.

Watch your dog, not the training plan

A relaxed dog can usually notice the trigger and still take a normally valued treat or engage with a toy. Signs such as stiffness, panting, yawning, repeated sniffing, cowering, shaking, trying to flee, or refusing a reward can indicate that the situation is too difficult. Increase distance, lower the sound, use a barrier, or end the session. Resume only when your dog has settled.

Do not lure your dog closer to something frightening or insist on a behavior while the dog is distressed. Forced, intense exposure—often called flooding—can make fear worse. Punishment can also add a negative association to an already stressful event. AVSAB recommends reward-based methods for dog training, including behavior problems; see its Humane Dog Training Position Statement.

Adjust the plan for noise sensitivity

Noise triggers are not limited to fireworks and thunder. The AKC’s article on potential sources of dog noise anxiety reports that UC Davis research found stronger anxious reactions to high-frequency intermittent sounds, such as smoke-detector beeps, than to low-frequency continuous sounds, such as a microwave hum. The article passage does not state the research publication year, so this finding should not be treated as a new 2026 estimate.

Look for patterns and reduce or remove a sound source when practical. Give your dog access to a quiet, welcoming place to retreat. If using a recording for gradual practice, keep it at a level where your dog remains relaxed and receptive; do not turn it up when the dog is distressed. The same AKC article reports that almost one-third of 13,700 pet dogs in a cited study showed noise sensitivity as the most common anxiety-related trait. Its retrieved passage does not state the study year or enough methods to interpret the figure as a current prevalence estimate.

Sound fear can have medical contributors, including pain. The AKC’s noise-sensitivity guidance advises veterinary evaluation as part of addressing the problem, particularly when the fear is significant.

Know when to get veterinary or behavior help

Contact a veterinarian if your dog’s behavior changes suddenly, anxiety is serious, or noise fear is difficult to manage. Seek qualified behavior support if fear or aggression makes outings unsafe or if gradual practice is not progressing. A veterinarian can assess possible medical factors and advise on care; a qualified behavior professional can help tailor management and training to your dog.

Progress can take time. The AKC’s dog-dog desensitization example says the process may take months. For noise phobia specifically, AVSAB’s article “A dog’s least favorite holiday?” describes a treatment course of at least six to eight weeks and potentially many months. These are source-specific estimates, not a guaranteed timeline for every dog.
