Take your dog somewhere quiet and familiar, give them room to rest, and avoid more intense activity or forced interaction. Offer a familiar treat or cue only if it seems to help; stop if your dog becomes more distressed. There is no universal recovery time. Contact your veterinarian about repeated stress or unusual pain and fatigue signs, and seek emergency care for difficult breathing, weakness, or collapse.
What to do when you get home
- End the stimulation. Move away from the people, dogs, traffic, noise, or other trigger that seems to be keeping your dog keyed up. If you are still outside, choose the quietest safe route home. VCA recommends removing a stressed dog from the stressor first (VCA’s guidance on stress signs and relief).
- Make a quiet landing place. Reduce household noise and activity, and let your dog settle somewhere familiar and safe. A practiced resting area and predictable routine can help; use a crate only if your dog is already comfortable resting in it. VCA also recommends providing a safe place to retreat (VCA; Cornell Riney Canine Health Center).
- Keep contact low-pressure. Stay calm and let your dog decide whether to approach. A familiar cue or treat may help some dogs, but food, attention, or requests to focus can feel like extra pressure to others. If stress signs increase, stop asking and give more space (VCA).
- Let your dog rest and watch for change. Notice whether breathing, posture, movement, and responsiveness gradually move back toward your dog’s usual baseline. Sources do not establish a recovery time that applies to every dog, so do not rely on a fixed number of minutes or hours. Persistent or worsening symptoms warrant professional advice.
How to recognize stress without overreading one sign
Stress is best judged in context and against your dog’s normal behavior. Possible clues include pacing, shaking, intensified whining or barking, prolonged yawning, drooling, frequent licking, panting without recent exercise, pinned-back ears, wide eyes or visible eye white, a tucked tail, stiffness, cowering, shifting weight, shedding, or an urgent need to urinate or defecate. A single yawn, lick, pant, or shake-off does not by itself establish that your dog is stressed (VCA’s list of stress signs).
VCA describes relaxed dogs as commonly having forward or semi-erect ears, a soft mouth, round eyes, and even weight distribution. These are broad clues, not a diagnosis; consider the whole dog and what has just happened (VCA).
What to change before the next outing
- Identify likely triggers. Note what happened before your dog became unsettled: for example, a crowd, particular dogs or people, traffic, bikes, skateboards, loud sounds, the route, the time of day, or how long the outing lasted. Triggers differ between dogs (American Kennel Club guidance on walk anxiety; Cornell).
- Lower the intensity. Try a quieter route or time, leave more distance from triggers, shorten the outing, or choose a calmer activity. A trigger may be tolerable at one distance and overwhelming at another; each dog has an individual threshold (AKC).
- Avoid forced exposure. Repeatedly bringing a dog close to a frightening trigger in the hope they will simply get used to it can compound stress. Avoid known triggers while you work out a suitable plan (AKC; Cornell).
- Keep training gradual and comfortable. For a specific fear, work at a distance where your dog can remain comfortable, and pair the trigger with something they value, such as food, toys, or praise. If your dog becomes stressed, increase distance. A treat pouch can carry rewards on a future training walk, but it is not a recovery aid (AKC).
- Let your dog opt out of socializing. A dog does not need to greet every person or meet every dog (Cornell).
Is it stress, zoomies, overexertion, pain, or an emergency?
Zoomies
Fast bursts of running, also called frenetic random activity periods (FRAPs), are not automatic proof that a dog is happy or needs more exercise. Cornell says there is no known specific cause; FRAPs may release pent-up energy or perhaps alleviate stress, and can occur with excitement or during overstimulating training (Cornell’s explanation of zoomies). Loose, wiggly movement and playful bouncing differ from a tense dog with wide eyes and a tightly tucked tail. Keep a running dog away from roads, stairs, slippery floors, and obstacles. If the behavior looks frightened or painful, seek advice.

Fatigue or possible pain
Stop exercise and offer rest if your dog is out of breath or repeatedly tries to sit or lie down. Slower-than-usual responses to familiar cues, irritability, unusual excitability, trouble lying down or getting up, or a changed posture can be signs of overexertion; VCA advises holding off exercise and arranging a veterinary examination (VCA guidance on play and exercise).
Stiffness or limping, difficulty moving or getting up, unusual lethargy or restlessness, reluctance to exercise, vocalizing, reacting negatively to touch, irritability, and excessive panting at rest can also indicate pain. Do not assume these signs are simply post-outing overstimulation; ask a veterinarian to assess them (Cornell’s guide to recognizing pain in dogs).

Breathing difficulty or collapse
Get emergency veterinary care promptly for rapid open-mouth breathing, blue-tinged gums or muzzle, visible abdominal effort while breathing, an extended head and neck, noisy breathing, weakness, or collapse. Call the emergency animal hospital ahead if possible. Cornell notes that a normal resting respiratory rate is 12–30 breaths per minute, but breathing effort and other distress signs matter too; do not use a rate alone to rule out an emergency (Cornell’s respiratory-distress guidance, updated March 2025).

Talk with your veterinarian if stress happens often, appears around many triggers, is getting worse, or is difficult to manage. A veterinarian can consider physical causes and, when appropriate, refer you to a veterinary behaviorist or trainer. If you are struggling to develop a behavior plan, Cornell recommends seeking help from a veterinary behaviorist or fear-free dog trainer (VCA; Cornell).
