Start with a nearby municipal shelter or nonprofit rescue, then confirm event details with the organization itself. Before you adopt, ask about the animal’s veterinary care, behavior, known needs, fees, and post-adoption support—and prepare a quiet place at home and a plan for veterinary care.

Where to find pet adoption events

Search for municipal shelters and nonprofit rescues in your area. The ASPCA recommends contacting a local shelter and offers a shelter-finding resource. Its adoption guidance also points to Petfinder and Adopt a Pet as ways to look for adoptable animals and organizations.

Directories are useful for discovery, but verify an event through the shelter or rescue’s own current listing or contact details. Event dates, animal availability, application requirements, and local eligibility rules depend on the organizer and location.

Confirm the details before you go

Contact the organizer or check its current event notice to confirm:

  • The date, hours, and exact location.
  • Which animals are expected to attend, and whether availability can change.
  • Whether you need to submit an application in advance or bring identification or other documents.
  • Whether same-day adoption is possible or the process takes longer.
  • The adoption fee, what it includes, and any other requirements.

The ASPCA notes that each organization sets its own process, parameters, and fees; some complete adoptions on the day, while others take more time. Do not assume that an event listing or directory reflects the organizer’s latest instructions.

How to assess an event and its organizer

Look for clear, consistent information and a process that gives you a chance to discuss whether the animal suits your household. The ASPCA’s position statement on shelter responsibilities says shelters should make information such as location, hours, fees, and return-to-owner process clear. It also describes conversation-based adoptions as one way to support matching. These are useful considerations, not proof that an organization holds a particular certification or guarantee of a specific standard.

  • Transparency: Can you readily find the organization’s location, hours, fees, and adoption steps?
  • Thoughtful matching: Do staff or volunteers ask about your household, experience, schedule, and the animal’s needs?
  • Useful answers: Can someone explain the animal’s known medical history and behavior, including what is not known?
  • Follow-up: Can the organization explain what support is available after adoption and what to do if the placement is not working?

A fee-waived event may make adoption more accessible, but the waived fee alone does not show whether an organization or match is right for you. The ASPCA says shelters may reduce or waive fees through promotions or in response to changing community and economic conditions. Evaluate the process and ask the same questions you would at any other event.

Questions to ask before adopting

What veterinary care has the animal received?

Ask what care has been provided and whether you can receive the records. Depending on the animal’s age, species, and history, ask about vaccinations, parasite testing or treatment, spay or neuter status, microchip, and recommended follow-up. Ask which medical needs are known and what care may still be due. Petfinder’s adopter guidance recommends asking about medical care and vetting; the organization can explain what applies to this individual animal.

What is known about the animal’s behavior and background?

Ask about history, temperament, behavior around children and other animals, and how the animal responds to being alone. Find out whether the information comes from shelter staff, volunteers, or a foster home, and in what setting they observed the behavior. An animal’s behavior in a shelter or foster setting may not tell you everything about how it will act in a new home; the ASPCA notes that behavior assessments have limitations. Ask what has not been observed or remains uncertain rather than treating a brief assessment as a guarantee.

What happens after adoption if we need help?

Ask what support the organization offers, whom to contact with questions, and what steps to take if the placement is not working. Return and follow-up terms vary by organization, so ask for the actual policy rather than assuming one based on an event listing.

What does the fee cover, and what costs come next?

Confirm the exact fee and inclusions with the organizer; fees vary and may help cover care, but the included services differ. Also budget for ongoing food, routine veterinary visits, preventive care, supplies, and any follow-up treatment recommended for this animal.

How to compare events or animals

If you are choosing between more than one event or animal, compare the factors that will affect the match and your ability to provide care:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What to compare What to find out
Organizer and process Are location, hours, fees, and adoption steps clear? Can someone explain what happens after you apply?
Household fit Do the animal’s known needs and behavior fit your home, schedule, experience, and other residents or pets?
Medical history What care has been provided, what records are available, and what follow-up is recommended?
Total cost What does the fee include, and what ongoing or near-term care expenses should you plan for?
Post-adoption support Who can you contact for help, and what are the organization’s follow-up or return procedures?

This is a practical way to organize your questions, not a formal scoring system. A lower fee or a faster process should not outweigh whether the animal’s needs and your circumstances are a workable match.

Prepare your home for the new pet

Set up a safe, quiet space

Before bringing the animal home, arrange a calm place where it can rest and settle in. Choose basic supplies suited to the species and individual animal. A bed, a suitable crate where appropriate, and species-appropriate toys or enrichment may help; they are options, not a universal checklist. Ask the organization what the animal already uses and what it recommends.

Plan veterinary care and adjustment time

Arrange care with a nearby veterinarian shortly after adoption, and bring any medical records you received. The first days may be stressful for a newly adopted animal. The ASPCA’s adoption guidance recommends routine, patience, calm direction, and allowing space rather than forcing interactions. Let the animal approach new people and situations at its own pace.

Keep identification current for outdoor dogs and cats

For dogs and cats that go outdoors, the ASPCA recommends current identification: a collar with an ID tag and/or a microchip whose registration details are kept up to date. A collar with an ID tag is a practical addition, but it does not replace keeping microchip registration current. Choose a collar that fits safely, and check the tag and registration details if your contact information changes.

Consider how you will manage veterinary costs

Pet insurance is one optional way to plan for veterinary expenses. Policies differ, and the ASPCA notes that plans may have waiting periods or exclude pre-existing conditions. Compare current policy terms carefully and discuss your pet’s needs with your veterinarian; do not assume a policy will cover treatment for a condition already identified.

What a national adoption campaign can—and cannot—tell you

In a July 15, 2026 announcement, the ASPCA said it awarded $2 million in grants to support fee-waived adoption events through its Rescue Effect campaign, with more than 450 shelters and rescues participating that year. The same announcement reported that nearly six million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues in 2025. Those are national campaign and intake figures; they do not establish which events are near you, what animals will be available locally, or whether an individual event is a good fit. Confirm local details with the organizer.
