Octopuses deserve respect because they are animals with abilities that are both striking and specific: they learn and adapt in some tasks, use their arms to explore as well as move, and can alter their skin color and texture. Those capacities do not make them miniature humans, and no single experiment or behavior describes every octopus. They make more sense when considered species by species and in the context of what has actually been observed.
What makes octopus problem-solving remarkable?
Octopuses can learn and show flexible behavior, but the evidence is task-specific. A controlled study, “Pull or Push? Octopuses Solve a Puzzle Problem”, trained seven wild-caught common octopuses (Octopus vulgaris) to open an L-shaped food container and retrieve it through a tight opening as the task conditions changed. All seven reached the study’s success criteria at each level. The researchers interpreted this performance as behavioral flexibility, while noting that experimental data on octopus cognition were scarce.
That is meaningful evidence about what those seven animals could do in that puzzle—not a universal measure of octopus intelligence. The Smithsonian Ocean overview notes that octopuses have not performed uniformly well in classic tests: some maze sequences have proved difficult, and lever-feeding tasks have largely been unsuccessful. A species’ abilities cannot be ranked reliably by one kind of test alone.
How are octopus arms different from ordinary limbs?
An octopus arm is not simply a passive appendage directed by a central brain. Its suckers are specialized for touch and chemical sensing, helping the animal investigate what it contacts. The nervous system includes a brain, optic lobes, and nerve cords running into each arm, as described in the octopus genome study in Nature.

The Smithsonian estimates that cephalopods carry about two-thirds of their neurons in their arms rather than their head. That unusual distribution helps explain why the arms can perform complex sensory and movement tasks. It does not establish that each arm is an independent mind; the animal’s behavior emerges from a connected nervous system.
How do octopuses change color and skin texture?
Octopuses can rapidly alter their appearance through structures in their skin. Thousands of chromatophores contain pigment sacs that expand or contract, changing the visible color. Reflective cells called iridophores and leucophores contribute other color effects. Octopuses can also raise or flatten skin projections called papillae, changing texture as well as color. The Smithsonian explains these mechanisms in its overview of how octopuses and squids change color.

Appearance change is useful for camouflage, but concealment is not the only possible function: cephalopods also use visual displays for warning and communication. Examples need to be tied to the animal involved, because evidence about squid or cuttlefish is not automatically evidence about octopuses. The range of skin effects is remarkable without assuming that every species uses them in the same way.
Do octopuses use tools?
One specific example comes from the veined octopus, which has been observed carrying empty bivalve shells and using them as portable shelter. The Smithsonian includes this behavior in its cephalopod overview. It is a compelling instance of an octopus using an object in a practical way, but it should not be generalized into a claim that all octopuses use tools.

What do neuron counts tell us—and what don’t they?
Published figures for the common octopus’s neuron count differ. The Smithsonian overview gives roughly 200 million neurons for Octopus vulgaris, while the 2016 puzzle study cites about 140 million. These are source-specific estimates with different framing, not a single undisputed exact count; they should not be averaged into a supposedly precise total. Either figure is less informative than the distinctive arrangement of the nervous system and the specific behaviors demonstrated in studies.
Does molecular research explain octopus intelligence?
No settled explanation follows from the recent molecular finding. A Marine Biological Laboratory article dated August 20, 2026, describes a reported rRNA-related variation in some octopuses, but explicitly says there is no direct evidence that this variation is linked to expanded brainpower. It is an open research lead, not an established cause of octopus intelligence: Marine Biological Laboratory, August 20, 2026.

What does respect for octopuses look like?
Respect begins with taking their abilities seriously without projecting human motives or assuming every member of a diverse group behaves alike. A puzzle experiment, sensory arms, changing skin, and a veined octopus’s shell-carrying each illuminate a different capacity; none stands in for the whole group. The available evidence here does not establish one current conservation status or population trend that applies to all octopus species, so broad claims about their conservation fortunes would be misleading.
