Choose a crate that lets your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Then match its construction to your dog’s behavior and how you’ll use it: wire crates often fold and include dividers, plastic crates offer solid sides, and fabric or mesh crates are lightweight but less durable. For a puppy, plan for adult size and use a secure divider to limit the space available now. Introduce any crate gradually and positively; confinement is not suitable for every dog in every situation.
How do you choose the right crate size?
Use your dog’s actual measurements and the crate’s interior dimensions, not breed labels or a general size chart. The practical test is whether your dog can stand comfortably without ducking, turn around, and lie down in a natural position. Check the specific model’s interior measurements, since exterior dimensions do not show how much usable space your dog will have.
For a growing puppy
Choose a crate sized for the puppy’s expected adult size, then use an adjustable divider or another secure barrier to reduce the usable area while house training. The puppy should still be able to stand, turn, and lie down; the divider is not meant to make the space cramped. As the dog grows, adjust the divider. Humane World for Animals explains puppy sizing and divider use in its Crate Training 101.
For an adult dog
Judge the fit by the dog’s posture and comfort rather than choosing extra space by default. Cornell notes that a house-trained dog may use a larger crate with room to stretch. Its guidance on fit and crate use is in Dog crates: When to use them and how to pick one.

Which crate type fits your dog and your routine?
There is no single best construction for every dog. Compare how much visibility or enclosure your dog seems to prefer, how the crate will be stored and cleaned, and whether your dog chews or tries to escape.
| Type | Useful strengths | Limits and fit considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Wire | Often folds for storage, commonly has an adjustable divider, and provides an open view. | Some dogs may prefer a more enclosed space. If you use a cover, Cornell recommends leaving one or two sides open. |
| Plastic | Durable, solid-sided construction that may feel more enclosed. UC Davis notes plastic crates can be used for airline travel. | Can be more cumbersome to store. For air travel, verify current requirements with the airline and carrier for the specific trip. |
| Fabric or mesh | Lightweight and foldable; may suit travel or short-term use for some small dogs. | Less durable than other options and may be damaged by puppies or chewers, as Cornell cautions. |
The American College of Veterinary Behaviorists also describes wire, plastic, and mesh options and notes that dogs can differ in which environment they tolerate or prefer. See its Behavior Tips: Crate Training.

What features should you compare before buying?
- Interior fit: Confirm the dog can stand, turn, and lie down comfortably inside the actual model.
- Growth and divider: For a puppy, check that a divider is included or can be fitted securely.
- Chewing and durability: A lightweight fabric crate may not withstand a puppy or dog that chews or pushes at the enclosure.
- Visibility and enclosure: Wire is open; plastic has solid sides. Consider the individual dog’s response rather than assuming one style is calming for all.
- Cleaning and storage: Compare how the crate is cleaned, whether it folds, and where it will be kept when not in use.
- Purpose: Decide whether it is for home use, short-term use, or travel. For air travel, check requirements directly with the relevant airline and carrier; rules can depend on the trip.
UC Davis discusses crate type, puppy dividers, and positive introduction in Crate Training Your Puppy. The American Kennel Club’s feature and sizing guidance is in Crates for Dogs: How to Choose the Best Dog Crate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you introduce the crate?
Make the crate familiar in small steps and pair it with pleasant experiences. Do not force a puppy into it. UC Davis and Humane World for Animals both recommend gradual, positive introduction; Humane World’s steps are in Crate Training 101. A crate should not replace opportunities for elimination, play, exercise, and other natural behaviors.

Excessive barking or vocalizing, pacing, panting, drooling, eliminating, or panic during confinement can indicate serious distress. Do not insist that a distressed dog remain confined; ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for guidance. Cornell identifies a pet-proof larger area or a pet sitter as possible alternatives for some dogs, while the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists advises veterinary support for anxiety and panic behavior.
