Keep the crate near you at first, plan for a puppy’s toilet needs, and treat persistent distress as a reason to slow down or reconsider crating—not as disobedience. Training can take days or weeks, depending on the dog’s age, temperament, and past experience.
Choose a crate that fits and feels comfortable
Your dog should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably in the crate. A crate that is too large may give a puppy room to toilet at one end and sleep at the other. If you buy a crate sized for your puppy’s adult growth, use a divider to limit the usable space while the puppy is small.
Wire and plastic crates can both work. Plastic crates may be useful for airline travel, while wire crates can be easier to collapse for storage. Whatever the type, put comfortable bedding inside and place the crate in a shared part of the home to start. Introduce the crate gradually during the day
- Invite exploration. Leave the door open and let your dog investigate at their own pace. Drop treats inside or place a favorite toy or meal near the entrance, then move it farther in as the dog becomes comfortable. Never push or force the dog inside.
- Make meals a positive association. Feed meals near the crate at first, then inside it if your dog is willing. Keep the door open until the dog is relaxed eating there.
- Practice brief door-closed periods. Close the door for a short time while your dog eats or enjoys a treat, with you nearby. Open it before your dog becomes distressed, and gradually lengthen the sessions.
- Add brief distance. Once your dog remains calm with the door closed, practice stepping away briefly. Increase time and distance in small increments, returning to an easier step if your dog repeatedly whines or struggles.
Do not use the crate as punishment. The aim is for your dog to choose to enter and settle, not merely to tolerate being shut inside. UC Davis recommends gradual door-closed practice; the Humane Society advises beginning overnight crate use once a dog can stay quietly for about 30 minutes while the owner is mostly out of sight. Treat that as a useful readiness guide, not a guarantee that every dog is ready on the same schedule.

Set up the first nights for reassurance and toilet breaks
Put the crate beside your bed or in a nearby hallway at first. Being close enough to hear your dog can help you respond to a genuine need to go out and avoid making the crate feel socially isolating. Once your dog is sleeping comfortably through the night, you can move the crate gradually if you want it in another location.
Puppies may need to toilet during the night; do not assume they can hold it until morning. A puppy’s needs vary with age and also with sleep, meals, drinking, and play. UC Davis’s house-training guidance gives these general daytime elimination-break examples—not an exact overnight schedule:

Use those figures as broad house-training guidance, not a promise about how long an individual puppy can wait overnight. If your puppy wakes and may need to eliminate, take them out calmly and give them the opportunity to go. Keep the trip purposeful rather than turning it into playtime.
Respond to whining without missing a toilet need
Whining can mean different things: a puppy may need to go outside, or a dog may be unsettled because the training moved too quickly. It is not automatically misbehavior, and it is not always a reason to open the crate immediately for attention.

- If a toilet trip is plausible, especially for a young puppy: take the dog out calmly, use the usual toilet cue, and return to the crate after the opportunity to eliminate. Avoid play and excitement.
- If the dog has recently toileted and seems to be seeking attention: do not make whining the reliable route to attention. Avoid yelling or punishment. In daytime practice, if whining keeps happening, shorten the session and return to a duration your dog can handle calmly.
- If whining is persistent or escalating: reassess the pace, the dog’s comfort, and whether crating is appropriate. Repeated accidents are a sign that the schedule or time confined may not suit the puppy; they are not evidence of spite.
Guidance differs in emphasis: UC Davis advises against opening the crate in response to whining during practice, while the Humane Society’s nighttime advice says to consider whether the dog needs to go outside. The practical distinction is to avoid reflexively rewarding attention-seeking while responding to a plausible toilet need.

Crating is not a treatment for separation anxiety, and for some anxious dogs confinement can make distress worse or lead to escape injuries. The ASPCA lists heavy panting, excessive salivation, frantic attempts to escape, and persistent howling or barking among signs that crate confinement may not be appropriate. If you see these signs, stop relying on the crate for confinement and ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for help. A baby-gated room may be a safer alternative for a dog distressed by a crate; see the ASPCA’s separation-anxiety guidance.

Some dogs need a slower introduction; others may not be comfortable in a crate at all. Prioritize a safe sleeping arrangement and an appropriate toilet schedule over reaching an overnight milestone by a particular date.
