Help a rescue puppy and resident dog settle in by introducing them gradually, supervising their early contact, and giving each a separate place to rest and eat. Keep meetings short and low-pressure; let either dog move away, and step in calmly if you see distress. There is no universal number of days for the dogs to adjust—go at the pace their behavior allows.
Prepare your home and assess the match
Before bringing the puppy home, consider whether your resident dog is comfortable around other dogs. Age, health, energy level, temperament, and previous experience all matter: an exuberant puppy may overwhelm an older or shy dog, while a bold resident dog may overwhelm a timid puppy.
Set up separate resting areas and a way to manage access between rooms. Plan to feed the dogs apart. Put away toys, bones, and other possessions either dog might guard or compete over. A secure gate or exercise pen can help create separation, provided it suits the puppy’s size and behavior and the puppy is comfortable using it. It is a management aid, not a substitute for supervision.
Make the first meeting calm and optional
If practical, let the dogs meet outdoors or in another neutral place rather than having the puppy arrive directly in the resident dog’s territory. Keep both dogs under calm, manageable control and give them enough space to remain comfortable. Reward relaxed behavior, and keep the first session brief before offering a break. VCA’s guidance on introducing a new dog to a family dog recommends a gradual approach.

Manage the first days at home
Give the puppy a safe area to rest and explore at a manageable pace. Keep early interactions brief and supervised, and separate the dogs when you cannot watch them. Separate sleeping arrangements at night are prudent at first, as are separate feeding areas. Put away toys, bones, and other valuable items that could prompt competition.

Allow the resident dog to retreat to its own resting space without the puppy following. A gate or pen can help maintain that boundary if it is secure and the puppy is comfortable in it. VCA’s new-puppy preparation guidance covers safe zones and separate feeding; its safety and management guidance discusses appropriate confinement.
Read both dogs’ signals and respond early
Watch the puppy and the resident dog, not just the dog that seems more assertive. Fear, avoidance, tension, a stiff posture, a tucked tail, or behavior that is escalating are reasons to create more distance or end the session. If it is safe, redirect calmly; do not insist that the dogs continue interacting.

Do not scold or punish growling, snarling, or other warnings. Those signals communicate discomfort; suppressing them can remove useful information without resolving the underlying problem. VCA explains this in its introduction to desensitization and counterconditioning. A puppy’s age does not make contact automatically safe, and play is not a reason to ignore signs that either dog wants space.

Contact your veterinarian if one dog remains persistently fearful, their behavior is not steadily improving, or you cannot manage the situation safely. Ask whether a qualified behavior professional or veterinary behaviorist is appropriate. The time needed for adjustment varies with the dogs’ comfort and social skills, so a fixed settling-in deadline is not a reliable measure of success.
