If your dog growls at or avoids your new puppy, calmly give them space and pause the interaction. Don’t punish the growl or force a greeting. Keep the puppy from crowding the older dog, provide separate places to rest, and supervise every interaction while you assess how both dogs are responding.
What to do in the moment
- Stay calm and create distance. Call or guide the dogs apart without yelling or grabbing at a tense dog. Redirect the puppy and let both dogs settle. If either remains uncomfortable, end the interaction rather than trying to make them greet again.
- Give the dog who is avoiding the puppy a choice. Don’t follow, corner, hold, or lure a worried dog closer. Let the dog move away and retreat to a place the puppy cannot enter.
- Interrupt puppy pestering. Puppies may not recognize that an adult dog wants space. Use a barrier or leash management as needed so the puppy can’t keep approaching, climbing on, or chasing the older dog.
- Try again only when both are settled. Keep the next interaction shorter or begin farther apart. Stop if either dog becomes tense or tries to disengage.
The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County advises calmly interrupting and redirecting, then trying again for a shorter time or at greater distance. Its guidance says: “Well-socialized adult dogs with good temperaments may set limits with puppies with a warning growl or snarl.” That qualification matters: a growl can communicate a boundary, but it does not prove that an interaction is safe or that every dog will respond the same way. Why you should not punish a growl
A growl is information that the dog is uncomfortable or wants more space. Don’t scold, punish, or deliberately provoke the dog for giving that warning. The American Kennel Club specifically advises against reprimanding an adult dog for growling at a puppy, and the Humane Society of Missouri cautions that punishment may suppress warning signals such as growling, snarling, snapping, or lip lifting. Instead, reduce the pressure and manage the puppy’s access.
Respecting a warning is not the same as allowing the puppy to remain in danger. Calmly separate the dogs and make the next interaction easier to manage. American Kennel Club: Introducing a Puppy to an Older Dog; Humane Society of Missouri: Introducing a New Dog to Your Current Dog

Set up the home so both dogs can relax
- Create separate retreat areas. Give each dog a comfortable place to rest where the other cannot intrude. A gate or exercise pen can help establish that separation, but it does not replace supervision.
- Protect sleep and quiet time. Give the resident dog time away from the puppy and individual attention. Keep them apart at bedtime at first.
- Keep interactions supervised. Don’t leave the puppy alone with the adult dog while you’re unsure the puppy is safe. A puppy may miss subtle signals that the older dog has had enough.
- Keep food and rest undisturbed. Arrange the puppy’s own comfortable area to eat, drink, and relax rather than expecting the dogs to share space before they are comfortable.
These steps are management, not a test of whether the dogs can “work it out.” Give them time apart whenever you cannot actively supervise.
Read the whole body, not just the growl
Look at the dog’s posture and the situation around the behavior. A single signal does not diagnose what a dog will do, but a cluster of signs that tension is increasing is a reason to interrupt and add distance.

- Signs the interaction may be too much: stiff-legged movement, prolonged staring, teeth-baring, raised hair, a deep or escalating growl, tense jaws, a low tail, shaking, or repeatedly turning the head away.
- Signs to respect as a request for space: moving away, avoiding the puppy, or turning away. Don’t insist on contact simply because the puppy is eager to meet.
The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County and the American Kennel Club describe these as cues to slow or stop an interaction. Consider the full context and combination of signals rather than labeling a dog based on one behavior. When to get professional help
Contact your veterinarian and seek qualified, reward-based behavior support if the behavior is escalating, either dog has bitten, or you cannot reliably keep the puppy safe. The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County recommends contacting an animal behavior professional if introductions do not go smoothly. A veterinarian can also assess whether a health issue may be relevant; the behavior alone is not enough to diagnose one.

Socialization does not require your puppy to approach this particular dog or to stay in an interaction that causes fear.
