Your cat looking away—or not slow blinking back—doesn’t mean it dislikes you. Direct staring can feel threatening to cats, and slow blinking is only one possible sign of relaxed social communication, not a required test of trust. Pay attention to your cat’s overall behavior and whether this is a new change.
Why your cat may look away
Direct eye contact can feel like pressure
A cat may look away to avoid an intense interaction. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Veterinary Interaction Guidelines note that direct eye contact from an unfamiliar person can be perceived as threatening. Cats Protection also advises people not to stare at cats (Shy Cats: How to Help Your Cat Relax; Cat Body Language).
Looking away by itself does not show that your cat is afraid of you, dislikes you, or lacks a bond with you. It may simply be choosing less intense contact.
Personality, experience, and setting matter
Some cats are more cautious than others. Genetics, limited early socialization with people, and frightening or harmful past experiences can contribute to timid behavior, according to Cats Protection. A cat’s comfort may also vary with the person, place, and situation.

Your cat may not use slow blinking
Slow blinking is one possible relaxed social signal, not a behavior every cat displays. Its absence is not a measure of how much your cat trusts or loves you. PetMD’s veterinarian-authored overview of the 2020 slow-blink study reports that cats were more likely to approach people who slow-blinked than people who kept a neutral face, but that finding does not make a returned blink a necessary sign of affection (Why Do Cats Slow Blink?, March 17, 2026).
A new change may have a physical cause
If a cat that was previously sociable becomes withdrawn or anxious, illness or pain could be involved. Cats Protection recommends contacting a veterinarian to check for those causes before treating the change as a behavior issue.

How to respond without adding pressure
- Stop staring and give your cat space. Sit quietly nearby rather than approaching directly. Let your cat leave or hide, and don’t pull it from a hiding place.
- Offer a gentle slow blink. When your cat seems comfortable, soften your eyes, blink slowly, and turn your face slightly away. Then give it time; don’t hold eye contact or wait for a return blink.
- Let your cat initiate contact. Keep routines predictable and allow your cat to approach when ready. If it does, a small food reward or a fishing-rod toy can support a positive interaction without requiring close handling. These are optional ways to interact, not prerequisites for trust.
- Read the whole body, not just the eyes. Relaxed ears and half-closed eyes can accompany relaxation. Hiding, flattened ears, wide pupils, crouching, or retreating can indicate stress or fear. Interpret those cues alongside posture and context.
How to tell ordinary gaze avoidance from a concern
Consider whether looking away is your cat’s longstanding style or a sudden change, and whether the rest of its posture looks relaxed or shows several signs of stress. Also distinguish social behavior from physical eye or vision changes: squinting, cloudiness, unequal pupils, unusual tearing or discharge, or swelling are not simply ways of avoiding eye contact.

Seek veterinary advice if avoidance or anxiety is a sudden change, especially if other behavior changes are happening too. Arrange prompt assessment if you notice squinting, a cloudy eye, unequal pupils, unusual tearing or discharge, a protruding third eyelid, or eye swelling. Also contact a veterinarian if your cat bumps into objects or seems unable to find familiar places. Cornell Feline Health Center advises owners to report behavioral or physical signs of vision trouble without delay; its guidance says healthy eyes are bright and clear, pupils are equal, and the cat is not squinting (Feline Vision Problems: A Host of Possible Causes).
