You can observe how your dog learns, remembers, solves a small problem, or follows a human cue—but no casual home activity can give a reliable overall intelligence score. Treat these activities as low-pressure games, not exams. A single missed cue or abandoned puzzle says little about your dog’s abilities; a meaningful new change in an older dog’s everyday behavior is a reason to talk with a veterinarian.
What “intelligence” means in dogs
Dog intelligence is not one skill. Researchers study distinct abilities, including learning and memory, problem-solving, flexibility when a task changes, responses to human cues, and social behavior. A dog may learn household routines quickly yet have trouble with a particular object puzzle. That difference describes performance on those tasks; it does not establish a global rank.
The Arizona Canine Cognition Center notes that animal intelligence takes many forms. A veterinary-authored overview from VCA likewise describes different kinds of cognition tasks, including those involving human communication cues, social learning, physical understanding, and cooperation. Trick counts, obedience, or success at one puzzle cannot capture all of these abilities.
How to observe your dog at home
Try one simple activity at a time, when your dog is comfortable and interested. These are informal observations inspired by research tasks—not standardized tests or clinical assessments.

- RELATIVE FINDER: Find and connect with your pup's family through the world’s first canine relative finder. Over 90% of dogs tested by Embark have a close relative, like a cousin, and 12% discover a direct family member.
- ANCESTRY: Our genetic analysis can reveal most dogs' breed mix going back to their great-grandparents. With the information embedded in your dog's DNA, we can identify the routes that distant ancestors took around the world before they came home to you
- BEHAVIOR INSIGHTS + TRAINING PLAN (IN-APP UPGRADE): Barking at the door or struggling when left alone? Upgrade in the Embark app to unlock 15 genetic behavior scores that show what your dog may be wired for, plus a personalized training plan built around those instincts
- Simple At-Home Swab With 2-Way Shipping: Swab your dog's cheek, register online, and mail it back with the prepaid label in the box. Results generally land in 2-4 weeks. Veterinarian developed, with results you can send straight to your vet from the app
Follow a pointing cue
Place a suitable treat where your dog can see it, then point clearly toward it. Notice whether your dog follows the gesture. Keep the cue and setup simple; if your dog does not respond, the result may reflect distraction, unfamiliarity, or the way the cue was given rather than a lack of ability.
Remember a familiar hiding place
Let your dog see you place a treat in an easy-to-find spot, briefly pause, then invite them to look. This gives you a chance to notice how they use recent experience. Keep the pause short and the hiding place accessible.

Explore a simple food puzzle
Offer a safe, easy food-reward puzzle and watch how your dog approaches it. Do they investigate, try a different approach, or lose interest? A problem-solving game can provide mental stimulation and enrichment, but a commercial puzzle toy is not a validated intelligence test and should not be described as improving intelligence.
Change an easy task slightly
Once your dog understands a simple game, make one small change—for example, move the reward or use a different easy hiding place. Notice whether your dog adjusts. Avoid making the activity harder just to elicit a response.

Make the activity fair and useful
- Use rewards that are appropriate for your dog and an environment where they can move and see comfortably.
- Keep the task easy enough to be enjoyable. Stop if your dog seems distressed, frustrated, or disengaged.
- Consider familiarity, willingness to participate, age, and physical or sensory limitations when interpreting what you see. Refusal or one unsuccessful attempt is not evidence of low intelligence.
- If you keep notes, record the activity and conditions. Compare your dog’s behavior with their own earlier behavior in similar circumstances, not with a universal score or another dog.
What canine cognition studies can—and cannot—show
Research measures particular abilities under particular conditions; it does not automatically translate into a score an owner can use at home. A 2024 Dog Aging Project study developed five short-form tasks covering spatial memory, executive functions, and social cognition. In its first experiment, 123 dogs completed the battery, and older dogs scored lower on some measures of spatial learning, memory, and response flexibility. A second, clinical-feasibility experiment involved 35 dogs: those meeting criteria for moderate or severe impairment scored lower on average than mildly impaired and healthy-aging groups, but the score distributions overlapped. These sample-specific group findings are not a universal home scoring system, a prevalence estimate, or a way to diagnose one dog from one puzzle. Read the study abstract.
Claims about dogs’ understanding of human perspectives also depend on the task and remain nuanced. The Vetmeduni Vienna Clever Dog Lab overview summarizes differing results across studies: a Guesser-Knower study with 94 dogs partially replicated earlier findings; a 2021 study of 260 dogs reported different responses to informants in true- and false-belief conditions; and a 2024 study of 92 dogs did not find evidence for experience projection. These results do not support a sweeping conclusion that dogs either do or do not understand human minds.

When a change calls for a veterinarian
A game is an observation, not a health assessment. If an older dog has a noticeable new change in learning, memory, social response, or everyday behavior, write down what changed and when, then discuss it with a veterinarian rather than relying on a home puzzle.
Age-related findings are specific to the dogs and measures studied. In a 2020 report on 119 pet dogs older than six years assessed with the Modified Vienna Canine Cognitive Battery, Vetmeduni Vienna described decreases with age in four of six measured factors: problem-solving, sociability, boldness, and dependency. The study did not report age-related change in trainability or activity-independence. Its researchers also found that a one-year enriched diet did not distinguish the treatment group from controls on the reported cognitive and behavioral measures, and said a larger sample was needed before making strong claims about dietary effects. This is not a basis for starting a supplement or changing your dog’s diet. See Vetmeduni Vienna’s report.
