Are Intelligent Dogs Harder to Train or Care For?

There is no established rule that intelligent dogs are harder to train or care for. Use your dog’s motivation, behavior and individual needs to guide its training and routine.

Not necessarily. The evidence cited here does not show that intelligent dogs are generally harder to train or care for. A dog’s motivation, behavior, surroundings and individual needs are more useful guides than a broad label like “smart.”

Does a smart dog need more training?

There is no established intelligence-based rule for how much training a dog needs or how difficult that training will be. Focus instead on what the dog does in specific situations: what behavior you want to teach, what distracts the dog, and what reward helps it learn.

For training and behavior modification, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based methods. Its public position page says the 2021 Humane Dog Training Position Statement remains its current authoritative statement; a 2025 clarification reiterates that AVSAB does not support aversive methods. Read AVSAB’s position statements and handouts.

Match the reward to the dog and setting

Food, toys, play, praise, petting or attention can reward desired behavior. What works depends on the individual dog and the situation: a treat that holds a dog’s attention at home may not be compelling enough around bigger distractions. Choose a reward that motivates your dog in that moment rather than assuming one option works for every dog. The American Kennel Club’s reward-training guide describes common reward options; AVSAB-hosted guidance discusses adjusting reinforcement to the dog and context.

A marker is not the reward

A click or brief word can mark the behavior you want to reinforce; the reward follows it. A clicker is optional—a consistent verbal marker can serve the same purpose. AKC’s guide to rewards and positive reinforcement explains both marker options.

Do intelligent dogs need more exercise or mental stimulation?

The sources do not establish an exercise, toy or enrichment quota based on intelligence. Dogs’ needs for exercise, appropriate toys and human attention vary. Observe your own dog and adjust its routine to its needs rather than applying a daily target based on a “smart dog” label. AVSAB-hosted guidance by Zazie Todd, PhD discusses variation in dogs’ interests and needs.

  • Training approach: Is the plan reward-based and focused on teaching a desired behavior?

Manage the environment as well as rewarding behavior you want to encourage. This practical approach is more useful than treating a behavior problem as proof that a dog is bored or exceptionally clever. For persistent, serious or potentially medical concerns, consult a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional rather than assuming intelligence is the cause. AVSAB’s public guidance points owners toward behavior resources and professional help.
