Check both the carpet maker’s care guidance and the rake’s instructions before starting. If the tool is not approved for your carpet, use a compatible brush, sweeper, or vacuum instead.
Check whether a carpet rake suits your carpet
Start with the carpet’s construction and care instructions, not just how long the pile looks. A rake that works on one rug may catch or pull yarn in another. Check the carpet label, warranty or care guide, and the rake maker’s restrictions. If either maker advises against raking, do not use the tool.
Match the tool to the pile
Safavieh recommends a carpet brush or sweeper for short-pile area rugs and a carpet rake for longer-pile rugs. This is guidance for Safavieh rugs, not blanket approval for all carpets or installed flooring. See Safavieh’s care and cleaning guidance.
Check the carpet construction
Pile height alone does not establish compatibility. For example, Lord & Lady says its particular carpet fur rake is intended for cut-pile carpet and not looped carpet. That restriction applies to that product; check the instructions for the rake you own. Loop construction can be vulnerable to catching, so do not assume a rake is suitable unless the carpet and tool guidance allow it. See Lord & Lady’s product instructions and Kasthall’s care guide.

How to rake pet hair carefully
- Read the instructions first. Follow the carpet or rug maker’s care guidance and the specific rake maker’s directions. There is no universal rake motion, pressure, direction, or number of passes that is safe for every carpet.
- Test a discreet spot if the instructions permit it. Lord & Lady advises testing its product on a small area and using it gently. Treat this as product-specific advice, not a guarantee that another rake will be safe on your carpet.
- Work gently and watch the fibers. Use the rake as its maker directs, without forcing it through resistance. Stop if you see snagging, pulled yarn, fuzzing, or a visible change in the pile’s texture.
- Collect loosened hair and keep up routine care. Remove gathered hair as appropriate for your carpet and continue vacuuming. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) recommends more frequent vacuuming in homes with pets to capture hair and dander; raking is supplementary, not a substitute. What to do if a rake is not suitable
For short-pile area rugs, a carpet brush or sweeper may be the more appropriate grooming tool according to Safavieh. If your carpet is looped, the rake maker excludes your carpet type, or the care guidance does not approve raking, choose a compatible alternative rather than testing the fibers with an unsuitable tool. Shaw Floors also advises against abrasive rubbing or scrubbing when caring for carpet; follow its guidance alongside your carpet maker’s instructions. See Shaw Floors’ carpet care advice.

Pet hair and dander still need regular removal. CRI recommends vacuuming more frequently in homes with pets. For some high-pile carpet styles, CRI cautions that brush rollers can accelerate texture change, so check the carpet maker’s vacuum recommendations and CRI’s high-pile vacuum guidance before choosing a setting or machine.

CRI’s general recommendation is to have residential carpet professionally deep-cleaned every 12 to 18 months, or more often if needed. That is a maintenance interval, not a schedule for using a rake.
