They may be in the same room when it is safe, but each needs a place to rest without being crowded or disturbed. Follow the foster organization’s health-separation rules before arranging introductions.
Why they need separate sleeping places
A crate or bed should give a dog a place to rest, not require it to share space with unfamiliar animals. Puppies may be energetic, and a resident dog may not welcome them near its resting spot. The San Francisco SPCA advises not to expect dogs to share and recommends supervising them around sleeping areas (San Francisco SPCA guidance on introducing dogs).
Bastrop County’s 2018 foster guidelines recommend giving each pet personal space, such as a crate with a bed, when physical separation is not possible. That means separate resting spots even if you use one room.
Check health and quarantine rules first
Before introductions, ask the foster coordinator what separation is required for these puppies. Rescue and shelter protocols can differ according to the placement and the animals’ health history.

For example, Humane Society Silicon Valley’s Canine Foster Guide says, “Underage puppies should remain separated from resident pets during their two-week quarantine.” This is HSSV’s protocol, not a universal rule or a study-established interval. Follow the instructions for your foster placement, and ask the coordinator or veterinarian about quarantine, vaccination, or disease concerns.
Choose a safe setup for each dog
The right arrangement depends on your home, the puppies’ size and behavior, their ability to tolerate confinement, and the foster organization’s guidance. The sources do not establish that one layout or product is best for every household.

Introduce them gradually and supervise
Follow your foster organization’s instructions on when and how to introduce the dogs. Bastrop County’s 2018 guidelines recommend neutral-territory, leashed introductions with positive reinforcement. Humane Society Silicon Valley advises that dogs not be left together unattended in its Canine Foster Guide. Keep a way to separate them, give them breaks, and let each retreat to its own quiet area.
During early introductions, put away valued toys and chews. VCA recommends feeding dogs in separate rooms because they may fight over food or other valued resources; it also cautions that a bold, outgoing dog can overwhelm a shy puppy (VCA guidance on introducing a new dog). Keep meals separate and watch how each dog responds around resting places and belongings.

When to get individualized help
Pause introductions and contact the foster coordinator or a veterinarian if either dog shows fear, guarding, aggression, or distress. They can advise on the puppies’ health and the right level of separation for your home. Do not leave the animals together unattended while you are working through a concern.
