Watch your dog’s stool, appetite, and vomiting; slow the change if symptoms appear. A salmon recipe is not automatically gentle, hypoallergenic, or right for every dog.
Use a gradual transition
Changing food abruptly can upset a dog’s digestion. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends taking seven to fourteen days as a general guide. Its example starts with 10% new food and 90% current food, then increases the new-food share over time. These are transition recommendations, not a guarantee that a dog will have no digestive reaction.
Base the portions on the total amount of food your dog normally eats at each meal, following the feeding guidance for the foods and your veterinarian’s advice. Keep the total meal amount appropriate for your dog rather than adding the new food on top of the usual portion.
Example: a seven-to-fourteen-day change
VCA’s transition example starts at 10% new food and 90% old food; on the second day it uses 20% new food. Continue increasing the proportion of new food over the transition period until the meal is entirely the new food. The exact day-by-day schedule can be adjusted to your dog’s response.

Go more slowly if your dog is sensitive to changes
For dogs with a history of gastrointestinal upset during food changes, or dogs that are picky eaters, VCA describes an approximately three-week option. The example moves through 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% new food, holding each stage for two to three days. Adjust the pace to your dog’s response; this is a general example, not an individualized veterinary prescription.
Watch for digestive symptoms and adjust
Check your dog’s stool, appetite, and whether they vomit as the new food is introduced. Loose stools, vomiting, or reduced appetite are reasons to slow the transition. If signs do not normalize within 24 hours, VCA’s transition guidance says to contact your veterinarian.

Do not try to manage a dog’s significant illness by continuing a food transition without veterinary advice. A veterinarian can help determine whether the food change is the cause and advise what to do next.
Salmon does not make a food hypoallergenic
Salmon is one protein that may be used in veterinary hydrolyzed diets, but that does not make an ordinary retail food labeled salmon a therapeutic or hypoallergenic diet. Switching to salmon alone also cannot diagnose a food allergy. Possible allergy signs include itchy skin, paws, or ears, as well as digestive symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea.

If you suspect a food allergy, ask your veterinarian about an elimination-challenge diet trial. The choice of diet needs to account for what your dog has eaten before, and the trial requires excluding other foods, treats, supplements, and flavored medications. A routine switch to a salmon recipe is not a substitute for that process.
Choose a food that fits your dog
Before changing foods, read the full label, including the intended life stage and nutritional adequacy statement. Consider your dog’s age, health, dietary history, and any veterinary recommendations. There is no universally best salmon formula established by these sources, and a salmon ingredient alone does not show that a food is suitable for your dog.

Know when to get veterinary help
Seek prompt veterinary attention rather than managing the problem at home if your dog is lethargic, too nauseated to drink, vomiting, or has blood in the stool. Persistent or worsening symptoms also warrant veterinary assessment. If your dog has eaten a dangerous food such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, or artificial sweeteners, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly.
