Sometimes—but there is no universal rule. Whether a dog can ride a ski lift depends on the resort, the specific lift, the season and whether the animal is a pet or a qualifying service animal. Do not assume a gondola allows dogs just because it has an enclosed cabin; check the operator’s policy for your exact visit date.
Can dogs ride ski lifts?
Some resorts allow dogs on selected lifts or during particular seasons; others prohibit pets on chairlifts, all aerial lifts or every lift. Policies can also distinguish between pets and qualifying service animals. The operator’s rules—not the lift’s appearance or another resort’s policy—determine whether your dog may ride.
For example, Vail does not allow pets on chairlifts, while Whistler Blackcomb permits qualifying service dogs on gondolas but not chairlifts. Loon Mountain says neither dogs nor service animals may ride its aerial lifts, including its gondola. Read the relevant Vail lift-safety policy, Whistler Blackcomb dog and gondola policy and Loon Mountain animal policy rather than generalizing from one area to another.

| Resort | Published rule | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Vail Mountain | Pets are not allowed on chairlifts. Service animals may use a chairlift only under the operator’s stated safety conditions. | The animal must remain harnessed, leashed or tethered; the handler must be able to use the lift safely, and the animal must not move independently in a way that creates a fall or other safety risk. Vail recommends gondolas where possible for service-animal access. Vail lift-safety policy. |
| Whistler Blackcomb | Qualifying guide and service dogs may ride gondolas, but not chairlifts. | The dog must be harnessed or leashed and under control. The policy page was updated June 5, 2026; check it for the current requirements. Whistler Blackcomb policy. |
| Loon Mountain | Dogs and service animals may not ride any aerial lift, including the gondola. | The operator cites risks to animals, guests and evacuation operations. Loon Mountain policy. |
| Tremblant | Dogs are accepted on the Panoramic Gondola and Casino Express Gondola in summer and fall, but not on the mountain during ski season. | Dogs are also excluded from the Cabriolet, Flying Mile and Le Grand Manitou. Where dogs are permitted, the leash must be no longer than three metres. Tremblant policies. |
| Vialattea | Pet transport is prohibited on lifts intended exclusively for skiers during winter. Where pets are allowed, chairlifts and the aerial cableway require a closed pet carrier. | Other permitted pet transport requires a lead no longer than 1.5 metres and a muzzle or suitable closed carrier. Staff may refuse transport because of crowding or passenger risk. Vialattea FAQ. |
| Aspen Snowmass | The service-animal policy identifies exceptions for the Silver Queen Gondola at Aspen Mountain and the Elk Camp and Sky Cab gondolas at Snowmass; it prohibits public service-animal access on other lifts under its stated safety policy. | Check the current policy and the exact lift. Aspen Snowmass service-animal policy. |
| Banff Gondola | Pets are not permitted in the gondola or facilities, except service dogs with appropriate accreditation presented on site. | The FAQ says emotional support animals are not permitted. Banff Gondola FAQ. |
| Sea to Sky Gondola | Dogs may ride under the operator’s pet policy. | Dogs must be leashed for the ride and in specified areas; access at the summit is limited. Check the current policy for the permitted areas. Sea to Sky Gondola pet policy. |
Why lift type is not enough to judge safety or access
A gondola has an enclosed cabin, while a chairlift is open-air seating. Vail notes that chairlifts generally require more loading and unloading skill than gondolas, and advises riders to follow signs and operator instructions and ride only if they can use the lift safely. That context does not mean gondolas are safe or permitted for dogs everywhere. The operator’s rules and the circumstances of the ride still matter. Vail lift-safety guidance.

- Are dogs allowed on this specific lift on my visit date?
- Does the rule change by season, operating hours or whether the lift is serving ski terrain?
- Does the policy differ for a chairlift, gondola or another lift type?
- Are there requirements for leash length, a muzzle, a closed carrier, dog size or the number of animals?
- Can crowding, cabin capacity or staff discretion affect boarding?
- What should I do if the lift stops or an evacuation is needed?
- If I am travelling with a service animal, which lifts are available, and does the operator require advance contact or documentation?
Service-animal documentation requirements are not uniform in the policies described here. For example, Banff Gondola says appropriate accreditation must be presented on site. Ask the specific operator what it requires; do not assume one resort’s documentation rule applies elsewhere. Banff Gondola FAQ.

Permission is only one part of planning. Before boarding, make sure you can follow the lift operator’s instructions and manage your dog during loading, unloading and the ride. Vail’s chairlift conditions for service animals, for example, require the animal to remain tethered and the handler to be able to use the lift safely. Vialattea’s carrier and leash rules show why equipment requirements must be checked against the specific lift and policy—not assumed from general practice.
