“Dog-friendly” does not necessarily mean your dog can ski beside you, enter downhill terrain, or ride a lift. Some resorts allow dogs on selected Nordic or multi-use trails; others permit limited uphill access, welcome dogs only in the village, or exclude them from the mountain during ski season. Check the rules for the exact activity, route, season, and time before you travel, then check for day-of closures.

What “dog-friendly ski resort” actually means

Resort policies may cover several different kinds of access, and permission in one area does not establish permission elsewhere. Check these separately:

  • Downhill ski terrain: Whether dogs may accompany skiers on lifts or downhill runs. Do not assume they can.
  • Nordic or multi-use trails: Access may be limited to named, mapped routes and may require a pass.
  • Uphill routes: Some mountains designate routes and restrict access by operating hours, conditions, or dog rules.
  • Village paths and resort grounds: A dog-friendly village does not necessarily mean mountain or trail access.
  • Lifts: A gondola or lift may accept dogs in one season and prohibit them in another.

There is no established industry-wide count of dog-friendly ski resorts or trails in the official sources cited here. The examples below illustrate different policies; they are not an exhaustive directory or a representative survey.

Examples of resort and trail rules

Whistler Olympic Park, British Columbia: designated multi-use trails

Whistler Olympic Park allows dogs on designated multi-use trails under a dog-pass system. Its winter safety policy requires a season or day Dog Pass attached to the dog’s collar. A user may bring no more than two dogs on multi-use trails. Dogs must be leashed in parking areas and controlled throughout the park; owners must bag and remove waste. Skijoring is prohibited, and dogs may not enter the Day Lodge or its deck.

Aspen Nordic and Aspen Snowmass, Colorado: trail access differs from uphill access

Aspen Nordic permits dogs only on selected trails shown on its maps. Its official site identifies leash zones and asks visitors to pick up after their dogs; Snowmass trails are subject to the town leash law.

Aspen Snowmass’s uphill rules are separate from Aspen Nordic’s trail policy. For the 2025–2026 season, its uphill access policy described designated routes and warned that access could close temporarily for safety, business levels, or snow mitigation. Snowmass allowed dogs on leash or under strict voice command outside its stated operating window, but not on the hills after 7:45 a.m. or before 4:45 p.m. once operations opened. Aspen Mountain did not allow dogs during the ski operating season. Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk set their own dog hours and cleanup rules. Recheck the applicable policy and daily notices for the season you plan to visit.

Mt Hotham, Victoria, Australia: permit access for eligible locals

Mt Hotham’s dog permits are limited to year-round residents, property owners, and business owners in the resort. Alpine Resorts Victoria says permits have been allocated, new applicants may be waitlisted, and short-term permits are not available. Under the Mt Hotham dog rules, permit holders must keep dogs leashed, collect and dispose of waste as directed, and walk them only in designated areas on the official map. This permit policy does not establish general visitor access to ski slopes.

Tremblant, Quebec: village access is not ski-season mountain access

Tremblant welcomes dogs in its pedestrian village and some mountain areas in summer, subject to leash and waste rules. Its policy states: “Dogs are not accepted on the mountain during the ski season.” The Tremblant policies page also says dogs may ride the Panoramic Gondola and Casino Express Gondola in summer and fall only; other lift and trail exclusions apply. Some hotels accept pets under conditions, so contact each property directly.

Vail and Breckenridge, Colorado: uphill access excludes dogs

Vail’s uphill access policy prohibits dogs at all times for the listed access. Breckenridge likewise says pets may not accompany uphill users in its uphill access rules. Both resorts warn that uphill access can be limited or prohibited because of operations or conditions; consult current resort information before setting out.

How to check access before booking or heading out

  1. Open the official page for the exact place and activity. Look for resort policies, trail maps, posted notices, and current operating conditions—not just a general “pet-friendly” description.
  2. Identify the type of access you need. Confirm whether the rule covers downhill terrain, Nordic trails, an uphill route, village paths, or a lift.
  3. Check dates, hours, and closures. Look for seasonal bans, early or late access windows, operating-day restrictions, and temporary safety or snow-mitigation closures.
  4. Confirm conditions for your dog. Check for a pass or permit, reservation, leash or voice-control standard, dog limit, mapped-area restriction, and waste requirements.
  5. Verify lift access separately. Confirm the lift type and season. A summer gondola policy does not establish winter chairlift access.
  6. Ask your lodging provider directly. Outdoor dog access at a resort does not guarantee that a hotel or rental accepts pets.
  7. Recheck shortly before leaving. Rules and operating conditions can change, so verify the official policy and day-of notices again.

Pack and plan for the rules that apply

  • Bring waste bags and a portable dispenser where owners are required to collect, bag, and remove waste. Follow the venue’s disposal directions.
  • Keep any required dog pass attached to your dog’s collar, and carry permit details if the policy calls for a permit.
  • Use the leash or control standard specified for the route; a rule allowing voice control is not the same as a leash rule.
  • Choose only mapped or designated routes where access is limited, and respect closures and prohibited areas.
