Prepare your dachshund before the baby arrives, make the first meeting brief and calm, and supervise every interaction directly. Keep the dog on a leash for the initial introduction, let the dog choose whether to approach, and make sure there is always a safe way to move away. If you cannot actively supervise, separate dog and baby with a secure gate or closed door.
Prepare your dachshund before the baby arrives
Start well before the birth so changes do not all happen at once. A veterinarian can review your dog’s health, vaccinations and parasite prevention, and discuss any behavior concerns. If your dog has shown aggression or predatory behavior, get professional guidance before planning an introduction.
- Practice calm routines: Refresh cues such as “sit” and teach your dog to stay off baby furniture. Where feasible, gradually adjust feeding, walks and attention to match the routine you expect after the baby comes home.
- Introduce baby-related sights and sounds: Let your dog investigate equipment and hear baby sounds in short, supervised sessions. Redirect chewing on baby items to the dog’s own toys.
- Set up a retreat and boundaries: Choose a quiet area where your dog can rest undisturbed, and decide which rooms will be off-limits. A securely installed gate can separate spaces while allowing the dog to see or hear family activity; a closed door can provide a firmer barrier.
Choose barriers based on whether they securely block access, fit the opening, and can be operated reliably by the adults in your household. A gate supports separation; it does not replace supervision when the dog and baby are together.
Make the first meeting calm and gradual
Plan the first meeting for a quiet time when two adults are available: one to hold the baby and one to handle the dog. Keep the dog on a leash, with relaxed control, and begin at a distance where the dog can remain calm.

- Settle everyone first. Choose a quiet space and keep the baby securely in an adult’s arms. Avoid crowding the dog or bringing the baby directly to the dog.
- Observe from a distance. Give the dog time to notice the baby. Reward relaxed behavior with praise or a treat.
- Allow choice, not pressure. If the dog remains relaxed, allow it to approach or sniff briefly. Do not force contact, and keep the leash loose enough to avoid adding tension while maintaining control.
- End while things are calm. Keep the first contact brief. Increase distance or end the meeting if either the dog or baby becomes distressed, and allow the dog to leave.
Repeat short, calm encounters rather than expecting the dog to adjust in one meeting. Let the dog retreat to its own safe area whenever it wants.
Supervise every interaction after the introduction
An adult must directly supervise whenever the dog and baby share space. Being nearby but focused on another task is not direct supervision. If you need to feed the baby, answer the door or turn your attention elsewhere, first put a secure barrier between them or close a door.

Keep the dog’s routine and rest opportunities as steady as practical. When the dog is calm around the baby, treats, praise or an appropriate food puzzle can help create a positive association. These rewards are not a substitute for physical separation when you cannot supervise.
Know when to stop and get help
If you see behavior that concerns you, calmly create distance and end contact. Signs warranting caution include barking, growling, snapping, mouthing, nipping, jumping, chasing, obsessive staring or searching, whining, pacing, fear or other marked anxiety. One signal alone does not establish a dog’s intent, but any concerning behavior is a reason to stop the interaction and seek veterinary guidance.

For a dog with a known history of aggression toward children or adults, or predatory behavior, arrange an assessment with a board-certified veterinary behaviorist or another qualified behavior professional before attempting introductions. Do not test whether the dog will tolerate the baby.
