Yes, a dog can be in the room during a diaper change if you can keep one hand on your baby and actively supervise the dog. If the dog can reach the changing surface, is excited or disruptive, or makes it hard to focus, put the dog behind a closed door or a secure gate until you are finished. The key is not the dog’s location by itself; it is keeping your baby safe and your attention on both.
When it is reasonable for the dog to stay
A calm dog may remain in the room if you can keep your baby on a safe changing surface, maintain a hand on the child, and prevent the dog from reaching or interrupting the change. That is practical guidance based on general supervision advice; CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics do not set a special rule requiring dogs to leave the room for diaper changes.
CDC advises supervising young children around dogs, including trusted family pets. Its home diaper-changing guidance says to keep a hand on the child at all times. The AAP likewise says infants should not be left alone with a dog, even in a swing. A familiar or well-trained dog still needs supervision.
When to put the dog outside the room
Use a closed door or a suitable gate if you cannot reliably manage the dog and the diaper change at the same time. Separation is the safer choice if the dog is excitable, crowds the changing area, jumps up, tries to investigate supplies, or draws your attention away from the baby. It is also sensible whenever you are uncertain that the dog will stay back.

A gate can be an optional household barrier, not a requirement or an official CDC or AAP recommendation. Choose a setup that fits the doorway, can be securely installed where it will be used, and actually keeps the dog away from the changing area.
How to make the diaper change safer
- Gather what you need first. Have the clean diaper, wipes, and any other supplies within reach so you do not need to turn away or leave your baby unattended.
- Keep a hand on your baby. CDC’s home diaper-changing instructions say to keep a hand on the child for safety at all times. Do not leave the baby alone on the changing surface to manage the dog or fetch an item.
- Keep the dog from reaching the surface. If you cannot do that while maintaining attention on your baby, separate the dog behind a closed door or suitable gate before starting.
- Finish with ordinary hygiene. Wash your hands after changing the diaper, keep soiled diaper materials away from surfaces that are difficult to clean, and clean the changing surface if it is visibly soiled or a leak occurs.
- Wash your hands after pet contact, too. CDC notes that animals can carry harmful germs even when they look healthy and clean. Wash up after handling or playing with the dog and after touching its food, waste, or supplies.
If you are unsure how your dog will respond
For a dog with a history of aggression, guarding, unpredictable behavior, or strong excitement around the baby, keep the dog separated during diaper changes and seek advice from your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional. If you are preparing for a baby and have concerns about your pet, AAP patient education advises consulting a veterinarian who knows the animal.

The cited guidance does not study dogs specifically during diaper changes or establish a safe distance from the changing surface. The decision to let a calm dog stay in the room is therefore conditional: keep the baby supervised, keep the dog from interfering, and separate them whenever you cannot do both.
