Choose a room or defined area the dog cannot enter, then control access with a closed door or a doorway baby gate used according to its instructions. Teach the dog a separate place to settle, and have an adult supervise whenever the baby and dog are near each other. A gate helps manage access; it does not replace supervision.
How do I keep my dog out of the nursery?
Decide which room or area will be off-limits, then establish the boundary before the baby arrives if possible. The ASPCA recommends keeping the baby’s door closed or installing a tall baby gate in the doorway when the dog is not allowed in the room. Its guide does not name a specific gate model or prescribe a height measurement.
Practice the new routine in advance. Reward the dog for staying on its side of the threshold, and teach a sit-stay or down-stay near the door if useful. Follow the selected gate’s own instructions for fitting and use; choose one appropriate for the opening and your household layout.
Should I use a closed door or a baby gate?

Where should the dog go during baby care?
In rooms where the dog may be present, set up a bed or mat away from the baby-care area. Practice a cue such as “go to your spot,” then reward the dog for going there and settling calmly. A familiar crate can serve as a retreat if the dog is already comfortable with crate training; it is not suitable for every dog.
A chew or food puzzle can offer optional enrichment during supervised quiet time. These aids do not replace the room boundary or an adult’s attention.

When is a dog-free boundary not enough?
The American Academy of Pediatrics advises never leaving a dog or cat unsupervised near a new baby, and says never to leave a young child alone with an animal. Keep an adult responsible for supervision whenever the baby and dog are near each other, even when a gate is in place. Decide in advance who will manage the dog during feeding, visitors, naps, and any moment when the caregiver cannot supervise; use the established door or gate boundary then.
If the dog seems nervous or fearful around children, shows aggression, or the household cannot reliably maintain separation, manage distance and do not force interaction. The ASPCA advises seeking help from a qualified professional for behavior concerns.

How does the dog-free zone relate to infant sleep safety?
Keeping pets out of an infant’s sleeping area may help reduce exposure to fur or dander, according to the AAP. Dog management does not determine whether a crib or bassinet is safe: the CDC advises placing a baby on their back for every sleep, using a firm, flat sleep surface, and keeping soft bedding out of that space. Follow that guidance for the baby’s actual sleep surface, separately from the dog’s bed, crate, or play area.
