For light dirt, wipe each paw with a warm, damp cloth or a pet-safe dog wipe. Rinse caked-on mud—and any possible road salt or deicer—with comfortably warm water, then dry the paws thoroughly, including between the toes. A quick check around the pads and nails helps catch trapped grit before it causes discomfort.
How do you clean mud from your dog’s paws after a walk?
- Set up before the walk. If muddy weather is expected, put a clean towel by the door and have a shallow rinse spot, sink, detachable shower head, or paw washer ready.
- Choose the cleanup for the mess. For light dirt, use a warm, damp cloth or a dog wipe explicitly labeled safe for pets. Turn to a rinse for caked mud or possible road residue. The AKC recommends washing for serious messes, while VCA’s paw first-aid guidance describes washing or wiping after exposure to irritants.
- Clean gently between the toes. Part the toes gently and inspect between the pads and around and under the nails. Wipe or rinse away loose dirt; don’t dig at embedded debris or pull at anything that seems painful.
- Dry each paw. Pat with a clean towel, including between the toes. Keep your dog off slick floors until the paws are dry.
Which cleaning method should you use?

Why wash paws after possible road salt exposure?
Rock salt and other salt-based deicers can dry and irritate paw pads and the skin between the toes. VCA also warns that these products can be toxic if eaten. If your route may have involved deicer, rinse or wipe the paws after the walk and do so before your dog can lick them. VCA’s paw first-aid guidance supports washing or wiping paws after exposure.
What should you avoid when cleaning paws?
- Don’t use dish soap for routine paw cleanup. Water or a product labeled for pets is the simpler choice. If shampoo is needed, use one formulated for dogs and rinse it thoroughly, as described in AKC dog-bathing guidance and AKC’s guide to choosing dog shampoo.
- Don’t give a full bath after every muddy walk. Routine paw cleanup usually takes care of the mess. AKC guidance notes that overly frequent bathing can dry or irritate a dog’s skin and coat.
- Don’t force handling. If your dog resists, pause and make paw handling gradual and calm rather than pulling at a paw.
Can booties or paw balm keep paws clean?
Booties may reduce direct contact with mud or winter residue on walks, but they are a prevention option only if your dog will tolerate them. Introduce them gradually; they won’t suit every dog. Paw balm or protective wax can help protect pads in some conditions, particularly winter weather, but it does not replace cleaning after a dirty walk. When should you contact a veterinarian?
Cleaning advice is not a diagnosis. If you notice redness, swelling, a cut, persistent licking, or continuing discomfort, contact your veterinarian for guidance rather than trying to treat the problem by scrubbing or applying a household product.
