If your dog’s breath is newly bad or the odor persists, contact your veterinarian. Bad breath is often the first sign owners notice with dental disease, and periodontal disease is the most common cause. Make that call especially promptly if your dog is eating less or having trouble eating, has a bleeding mouth, facial or jaw swelling, drools, has nasal discharge, chews abnormally, drops food, or has a broken or loose tooth. Odor alone cannot tell you the cause or how urgent the problem is.
When bad breath warrants a vet visit
Do not dismiss persistent or new bad breath as normal. Contact your veterinarian to discuss it, even if your dog seems otherwise well. Dental disease can be painful while a dog continues to eat, and a normal appetite does not rule it out.
Call your veterinarian if you notice these signs
- Difficulty eating, reduced appetite, abnormal chewing, or dropping food
- Bleeding from the mouth, a broken or loose tooth, or visible signs of oral pain
- Swelling of the face or jaw
- Drooling, nasal discharge, pawing at the mouth, or reluctance to have the face touched
These signs call for veterinary advice; the veterinary sources cited here do not set a universal emergency or same-day deadline based on bad breath alone. Tell the clinic what you have observed and let the veterinarian determine how soon your dog should be seen. If your dog appears acutely unwell, contact a veterinarian for guidance rather than relying on odor as a triage test.
What may be causing the odor
Periodontal disease is the most common cause of canine bad breath. Plaque is a bacterial film on teeth; minerals in saliva can harden it into tartar. Bacteria can inflame the gums, and advancing disease can damage the bone and other structures supporting the teeth. Teeth may eventually loosen or be lost. Cornell notes that plaque can begin hardening in as little as 24 hours. Cornell’s dental disease guide explains why visible buildup is only part of the concern.

VCA Animal Hospitals reports that more than 80% of dogs over age three have active dental disease. This is an estimate reported in its handout, not a prediction about an individual dog. VCA’s dental disease overview describes periodontal disease as the most common dental problem in dogs.
Other possible causes
Bad breath can also be associated with a tooth-root abscess, food or other material trapped between teeth, an oral mass or cancer, or persistent bleeding related to a clotting abnormality. Systemic illnesses, including kidney disease and diabetes, are also among the possible causes described by veterinary sources. The smell’s character is not a reliable way to distinguish these problems at home.

Why a home look may not reveal dental disease
You can look for visible changes, but seeing clean-looking teeth does not rule out disease below the gumline. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Pet Dental Care brochure puts it plainly: “Most dental disease occurs below the gum line where you can’t see it.” Read the AVMA brochure.
A veterinarian can examine the visible mouth while your dog is awake, but a thorough oral assessment and dental X-rays may require anesthesia. The veterinarian will decide which examinations and treatment are appropriate for your dog’s findings and health.

What to expect at a veterinary dental assessment
If dental disease is suspected, veterinary care may include scaling and polishing above and below the gumline, dental X-rays to assess roots and bone, and removal of teeth that are loose, fractured, or badly affected. The exact plan depends on the examination and any diagnostic findings; not every dog needs the same procedures.
In its canine halitosis handout, VCA says, “The most common cause of halitosis in dogs is periodontal disease arising from plaque (biofilm) and tartar build-up.” The handout is authored by Tammy Hunter, DVM, and Jan Bellows, DVM, Dipl. Prevention after the current odor is assessed
Home dental care can help prevent plaque buildup, but it is not a substitute for having persistent bad breath assessed or for treating established disease. Cornell describes brushing as the most effective home-care method. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste formulated for dogs; dog toothpaste is designed to be swallowed. Once tartar has formed, brushing or diet will not reliably remove it, and professional cleaning may be needed.
After discussing your dog’s dental health with a veterinarian, you can ask whether a product carrying the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal is suitable. VOHC-accepted dental diets, chews and treats, water additives, gels, and sprays may be useful plaque-control adjuncts; acceptance is based on scientific studies showing reduction in plaque or tartar. These products do not diagnose the cause of odor or replace an examination.
Avoid hard objects such as bones, antlers, hooves, rawhide, and hard manufactured toys as dental fixes. They can wear down or fracture teeth, and some may pose gastrointestinal hazards. Do not use human toothpaste or home scalers on your dog.
