Yes—food can temporarily affect a dog’s breath, and reflux or regurgitation can sometimes contribute. But persistent bad breath is more often linked to dental or other oral disease than to a stomach problem. Smell alone cannot identify the cause, so a veterinary oral examination is a sensible first step.
Why dental disease is the first thing to consider
Plaque is a bacterial film that builds up on teeth. Minerals in saliva can harden plaque into tartar, which irritates the gums and can lead to periodontal disease. Bad breath may be noticeable before an owner sees signs of mouth pain. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and VCA Animal Hospitals describe dental disease as a common explanation for halitosis in dogs.
Other oral causes include a broken or infected tooth, material caught in the mouth, or an oral mass. Problems involving the nose, throat, or lungs—and systemic conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, or diabetes—can also be associated with unusual breath. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine lists these among possible sources.
When food or a stomach problem may be involved
Food and eating
A strongly scented food or something a dog has eaten may change breath temporarily. Diet can also influence the mouth’s environment, but persistent bad breath by itself does not show that a food is unsuitable or that the stomach is responsible.

Ordinary dry food is not a reliable way to prevent periodontal disease. Some specially formulated dental diets are designed to help control plaque, but that does not make them a treatment for unexplained bad breath. VCA’s guidance on nutrition and periodontal disease also notes that mixing a dental diet with other food can reduce its intended effect.
Reflux, regurgitation, and other digestive signs
Reflux can bring stomach contents into the esophagus and may be associated with bad breath. The possibility is more relevant when odor occurs alongside regurgitation, vomiting, repeated or excessive swallowing, coughing, or reduced appetite. These signs can overlap with other digestive conditions, so they are not enough to diagnose reflux or GERD at home. VCA’s overview of GERD in non-brachycephalic dogs describes signs and veterinary assessment.

UC Davis identifies the esophagus and stomach as possible sources of bad breath, along with oral, nasal, throat, and lung sources. A veterinarian can examine the mouth first and decide whether the findings explain the odor or whether further evaluation is warranted.
When to contact a veterinarian
Arrange a veterinary appointment if bad breath persists or keeps returning. Contact a veterinarian more promptly if it occurs with difficulty or reluctance eating, dropping food, mouth bleeding, excessive drooling, jaw or facial swelling, vomiting, regurgitation, or appetite loss. These signs can indicate painful dental disease or another problem that needs assessment.

Tooth brushing is preventive care, not a substitute for diagnosing or treating established dental disease. Cornell calls brushing the most effective home method to prevent dental disease, and UC Davis describes daily brushing as the gold standard for removing bacteria from oral surfaces. Use dog-specific supplies and introduce brushing gradually and gently. If a dog already has painful or advanced dental disease, a veterinarian should advise on treatment before you try to brush the affected area.

Dental diets, chews and treats, water additives, oral gels, and sprays are other possible adjuncts. The Veterinary Oral Health Council’s accepted-products list identifies products with evidence of reducing plaque and/or tartar. Check the current list or ask your veterinarian which products are appropriate for your dog; acceptance does not mean a product will resolve the underlying cause of bad breath.
