Teach your dog that a calm sit is the way to ask: mark the moment they sit, then give the treat while they remain seated. Start somewhere quiet, reward the behavior consistently, and gradually practice around more distractions.
What you need to get started
Choose a calm spot with few distractions and have a few small treats your dog enjoys. A clicker is optional; a consistent word such as “yes” can mark the moment your dog gets it right. Use treats that suit your dog’s diet, and ask your veterinarian about dietary limits or appropriate choices for your dog.
Teach or refresh a sit
- Start with your dog standing. Hold a treat near their nose and slowly move it over their head toward their rear so their hind end lowers.
- The instant your dog sits, mark the behavior with your clicker or “yes,” then give the treat.
- Once your dog follows the movement reliably, use an empty hand for the signal and deliver the treat from your other hand. When the movement is consistent, say “sit” just before giving the hand signal.
Avoid pushing your dog’s hind end down. Let the reward teach the position.
Make sitting the polite request
When your dog sits while you are holding a treat—or offers a sit during an everyday routine—mark and reward that choice. Over repetitions, the sit becomes a simple way to ask for something wanted, rather than jumping or demanding it.

- Just press to mark desired behavior, then reward for faster learning.
- The spring wrist length : 16cm/6.3inches and can strength to 25cm/9.84inches.
- Package include : Black + Blue,each color 1 pcs.
Give the treat while your dog is still sitting. If they stand or jump before you can deliver it, pause and reset calmly; reward the next successful sit instead. This makes the seated position, not the jump, the behavior that earns the treat.
Build a short wait, then practice in new places
After your dog understands that sitting earns the treat, ask for a brief sit and wait, then release and reward. Increase the wait in small steps, and only make it longer while your dog is succeeding. Keep the request manageable rather than requiring a long or stressful performance.

When the sit is reliable in a quiet spot, practice in other settings. More distractions can make the exercise harder, so move at your dog’s pace and consider a more motivating reward in busier places.
Use the sit in everyday routines
You can ask for a sit before giving a treat or opening access to another wanted activity, such as a meal or walk. Keep the cue and expectation simple and consistent. Routine sit-and-wait practice is a way to build manners without turning access into a prolonged test.
